Drilling Offshore to Affect World Oil Prices... and other Tales from the Iraq-Pakistan Border

Various individuals have argued for drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) as a means to affect the price of oil. This is true despite this recent assessment by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration, the Federal Government's nonpartisan analytical group on energy issues. From Annual Energy Outlook related analyses (June 2007): The OCS is estimated to contain substantial resources of crude oil and natural gas; however, some areas of the OCS are subject to drilling restrictions. Ainsworth Agrees to Maintain Bemidji Plant 'Salable'

May 5--Facing a probable legislative mandate, Ainsworth Lumber Co. has agreed to keep its three closed Minnesota plants operationally ready, two lawmakers said Tuesday.
On Jan. 27, Ainsworth announced it was permanently closing its Bemidji and Cook plants.
Legislation proposed by Rep. John Persell, DFL-Bemidji, and Sen. Mary Olson, DFL-Bemidji, to require Ainsworth to maintain its facilities in a salable condition for at least two years led to an agreement with Ainsworth that could help the city of Bemidji find another user for the closed Ainsworth OSB plant in Bemidji.

Ainsworth Seeks New Uses for OSB Plants

Apr. 23--Ainsworth Lumber Co. probably won't mill oriented strand board again at the Bemidji, Grand Rapids and Cook, Minn., plants.
But the company has begun investigating alternative uses for the 223-acre industrial site in Grand Rapids.
Bruce Gibson, investor relations for the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company, said Ainsworth also hopes to find alternative uses -- notably in bio-energy products -- for the Bemidji and Cook plants in the future.

Ainsworth Shuts Down Mills in Cook and Bemidji, This Time for Good

Jan. 28--Vancouver-based Ainsworth Lumber Co. announced Tuesday that it would permanently close its oriented strand board mills in Cook and Bemidji.
The Cook mill had not operated for a year, and the Bemidji mill curtailed operations in October.
Both mills were acquired by Ainsworth in 2004 as part of the acquisition of the OSB business of Potlatch Corp. Ainsworth's third Minnesota mill at Grand Rapids, which the company also bought from Potlatch in 2004, was per-manently closed in August.

Jan. 4--Despite the worst year for stocks in nearly 80 years, a few central Ohio companies were able to find a little daylight in the darkness of 2008.
The Dow Jones industrial average ended 2007 at 13,264, dropped as low as 7,552 on Nov. 20, and closed the year at 8,776, a loss of 33.8 percent.
The meager honor roll included: State Auto, which finished the year up 14.3 percent at $30.06; Park National, which was up 11.2 percent at $71.75; and M/I Homes, which lost 73 percent in 2007 but was up 4 cents and 0.4 percent in 2008, closing at $10.54.

AirNet Systems, Inc. today reported total net revenues of $38.2 million for the three months ended March 31, 2008 versus $41.5 million for the same period last year, a decline of 8%. Income from operations before income taxes decreased to $1.0 million for the first quarter of 2008 from $2.0 million for the same period in 2007. The Company recognized an income tax benefit of approximately $8.3 million in the first quarter of 2008 primarily as a result of a discretionary income tax method change approved by the Internal Revenue Service on March 11, 2008 as reported in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2007, which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on March 31, 2008. As a result, net income was $9.3 million, or $0.90 per diluted common share, for the first three months of 2008 compared to net income of $1.9 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, for the prior year.[More...]
