Boom-Bust Cycle: Playing A Complex Game

Half of my career, I have worked for bosses who were actuaries, and half not. Half of my career, I worked for bosses that were intellectually curious, and half not. There was a strong, but not perfect correlation between the two — most actuaries are intellectually curious, but there are a few that aren’t. Those that know me well, know that I am a pragmatic idealist. I have strong beliefs, but I also have a strong desire to solve the problem. Where I run into difficulty is where the problem is ill-constructed, and does not admit a good answer. Any answer would be subject to numerous qualifications and explanations. Perhaps I can give some examples: “What’s my illiquid structured finance bond worth?” Oh my. Whether residential mortgage, commercial mortgage, or asset-backed, that depends a lot upon future loss activity across the whole financial[More...]

What Kind of Investor Are You?

One of the keys to successful investing is to identify what kind of trader you are or what kind of trader you want to become. This is important so you can select the right kinds of stocks that fit your own risk to reward ratio and investment style. What's interesting is that so many people believe they're one kind of investor when in fact they are something totally different. So before you say you're a Growth Investor or a Value Investor, or etc., ask yourself; What kind of stocks do you want to be in? Are you looking for: - High flyers and fast movers? - Stocks with big earnings momentum or aggressive growth? - Or maybe solid companies with dependable growth? - Or mature companies with income producing dividends. - Maybe you're looking[More...]

Rewarding Innovation & Punishing Stagnation

In yesterday's blog post around business failures I discussed how failing companies often get into patterns where they become more interested in "defending the religion of their business model", instead of making the changes they need to make in order to survive. One of the consequences of this is that the company begins to punish those who try to innovate and change the company, while rewarding those who celebrate the status quo. This dubious business practice creates a double edged sword that destroys the company by encouraging the very business practices that are destroying the company, while simultaneously chasing away the agents of change who can save it. <p style="margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri; font-size:[More...]

Regarding Profits At WFC And GS

Since Wells Fargo announced last week that it expected record first quarter profits, I have been looking for some kind of reality-based explanation. Certainly the market liked the news. But what does it mean, this alleged $3 billion in profits? Today we received some additional news, as KBW downgraded the stock: Wells Fargo & Co., the second- biggest U.S. home lender, may need $50 billion to pay back the federal government and cover loan losses as the economic slump deepens, according to KBW Inc.’s Frederick Cannon. KBW expects $120 billion of “stress” losses at Wells Fargo, assuming the recession continues through the first quarter of 2010 and unemployment reaches 12 percent, Cannon wrote today in a report. The San Francisco-based bank may need to raise $25 billion on top of the $25 billion it owes[More...]

It seems every once in awhile - and more so lately - the financial pundits begin to climb the China wall of worry. And it’s not an unreasonable question: Last year, China became the biggest foreign holder of U.S. securities, when it plunked down almost $66 billion for them in October alone. With that big of a stick, some believe that China could bring down the U.S. without ever setting foot here. Others feel it already is, by artificially setting[More...]

I wrote that 2009 will bring us "innovations" and "interventions" like nothing before (with Fannie and Freddie as the centerpiece of the toolbox) so I guess I should not be surprised by this proposal. That said, my jaw hit the floor when I read it. I hit refresh a few times - checked the calendar (nope, not April 1st) - certainly this must be a hoax. So get ready for this; no matter what your home appraises for - if it falls 10%, 20%, or 30% below purchase price, and you are underwater - you can STILL refinance under the latest proposal being floated at the full original[More...]
