In June 2006, a Chinese high court reinstated patent protection for Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra. Soon after, the Chinese government committed $500 million to food and drug regulation – more than was spent in the previous seven years combined. Then, in July 2007, Zheng Xiaoyu – China's former head of the State Food and Drug Administration – was executed for taking bribes. These three events signaled China's drug market was finally open for business. And it's the fastest-growing drug market in the world. But here's the catch: It's easy to find drug companies working in China... but not so easy to find ones that will let you profit off the trend. Let me explain... Fueled by a massive aging population, rapid economic development, and urbanization, the pace of China's medical spending over the past five years has been double its[More...]

American Oriental Bioengineering, Inc (AOB) is Thriving in Today’s Sluggish World Economy

American Oriental Bioengineering, Inc, (NYSE:AOB) announced today that its fourth quarter 2008 revenues were up a whopping 68% to $96.3 million. Net income for the same period was up 43% to $21.7 million. The good news reflects the continued demand for the company’s pharmaceutical and nutritional products in the Chinese marketplace. American Oriental, based in China, is engaged in the development and production of plant based products, both pharmaceutical and nutritional. The products are produced from the leaves and roots of various plants. In the case of PBPs (Plant Based Pharmaceuticals), they are used to treat illnesses or associated symptoms and are available in China by prescription and over-the-counter. PBNs (Plant Based Nutraceuticals) are also produced from plant leaves and roots, but are used as preventatives and for general health, and are all sold over-the-counter.
Biotechnology Industry - Zacks Analyst Interviews

Historically, the biotech industry was less impacted by market conditions due to its unique characteristics. In large part, biotech stocks have been event-driven. Specifically, investors are more focused on clinical development and pipeline advancement for individual biotech companies. However, current market conditions have exerted a negative impact on the valuation of individual companies in the biotech industry. We believe the different impact current market conditions have exerted is mainly due to the credit crunch. Most biotech companies are in early or middle development stages, and continuing financing is an integral part of their operations in order to advance their drug pipelines. Under current market conditions, liquidity has dried up for some companies, and raising capital has been extremely difficult in the past few months. Some companies are forced to enter into survival mode to reserve cash by restructuring. Some even have to suspend operations[More...]

American Oriental Bioengineering Inc. (AOB) is a China-based specialty pharmaceutical company which develops, manufactures and commercializes both plant-based pharmaceutical (PBP) and plant-based nutraceutical (PBN) products. Third quarter financials were strong and in line with our expectations. We expect the company to continue to deliver strong performances in the coming quarters due to relatively high growth in the Traditional Chinese Medicine market in China. We maintain our Buy rating on AOB with a price target of $16. PBPs are Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM) based on non-synthetic medicinal compounds that are extracted from leaves and roots of one or more plants. Each PBP has certain medicinal functions and proven efficacy in the treatment of at least one or more illnesses or[More...]

The company’s revenues rose 62% to $70.6 million, and net income was higher by 38% at $16.5 million or 21 cents per diluted share. According to the company, net income failed to keep pace with the rise in revenues because of higher sales and marketing expenditures and because of amortization of costs from acquisitions.
American Oriental Bioengineering, Inc. completed two acquisitions while, at the same time, announcing it had declined to pursue a third. In August, AOB had announced a signed letter of intent to pay $110 million to acquire an unnamed China pharmaceutical distributor with $550 million in annual revenues.
