Dividends Are Powering Up The Tech Sector

The past week marked an increase in positive dividend news from major companies. The most bullish news came from software giant Oracle, which declared its first ever quarterly dividend of $0.05/share. Most of the large cap tech companies from the dot-com boom eras are now mature plays on the sector. They could now afford to share an increased portion of their revenue streams with shareholders. Cisco Systems is another major tech company, which announced its intent to pay a dividend[More...]

Best Dividends Stocks For The Long Run

In his book, Stocks for the Long Run, Wharton Professor Jeremy Siegel proves that stocks have been the best performing investing for the past 200 years in the US. Equities outperformed other assets classes such as gold and fixed income. Typically, stock returns are derived from price appreciation and dividends. Dividend payments have historically accounted for 40% of the average annual stock market return. A lesser known fact is that reinvested dividends have provided for 97% of historical stock market returns. During tough market conditions such as the 2008 bear market, investors realize the positive of getting a return on your investment even if prices are collapsing across the board. Add in dividend increases, and several[More...]

Stocks Resume Selloff As Distribution Day Rattles Investors Who Bought Last Weeks LAME Rally

Do people not pay attention to volume at all? I am starting to begin they don’t after listening to all the typical talking loud-mouths this weekend. They all clamored and were happy the indexes were up 15% to 20% last week. Yet not a single person anywhere mentioned that volume was lower and lower each day as the rally went along. They also did not mention that we were right near/at the 50 day moving averages which are in a downtrend on all the indexes. Leaving these two key facts out made anything they said irrelevant. There was always a possibility of waking up and seeing a market running away today but the truth is this market is predictable yet insanely impossible to trade unless you are a daytrader. After my initial short positions before the selloff really started, things have been harder to manage as shorts are not going down in a smooth line like they should in a bear market. This is making for a very difficult trading environment and why unless[More...]

Stocks Continue The Selloff With Volume Finally Picking Up On The Selling

Today can be called nothing other than nasty as most of the indexes made round trips back to either six-year or eleven-year lows, following a nasty selloff that came on very heavy volume. Volume picked up on every exchange as finally some signs of panic selling hit the market. This selling took the markets off around 5% to 6% and a lot of stocks were just walloped.

It was a brutal day if you were a falling knife catcher as the market took those impatient bulls who believed the lows were in out and beat them silly with a 6.5% loss on the Nasdaq, a 6.6% loss on the NYSE, and a 6.1% loss on the SP 500. The losses were made even more damaging by the fact that they hit new lows from the recent rally attempt and volume picked up giving the market a very heavy distribution day. This distribution day adds to the pressure the market is facing as each and every day passes. The market in terms of the Nasdaq and Nasdaq 100 are now down over 51% from the October 2007 highs. These losses have been extremely damaging to the psychology of many market players and has done some major damage to individuals portfolios. This sad news is made even more sad knowing that the market does not appear to be near a low–at least as far as the market is currently concerned. This is obvious to me via the volume that is coming[More...]

Stock Market Indexes Start The Week Off With A Low Volume Selloff; All Indexes Are Holding Thursday’s Lows

Stocks did what they have been doing for the entire past thirteen months and that was finishing with a lower close. This weak close was made worse in that it was yet another volatile late day move. This time it was a rollover to the downside with the indexes finishing right near their lows-of-the-day. This very weak close was very nasty to see but some consolation can be taken with the low volume that came with the selling. That lower volume was the second straight day of a lower volume pullback that has come since the reset of the rally attempt on Thursday. On Thursday the market dipped to new lows on a few indexes that reset the previous rally attempt. However, by the close, the market reversed to a very bullish close on much higher volume. That put market players who have been watching this selling for thirteen months now in a better mood. The pullback the past two days have made some pretty upset that the market[More...]

Air Products Reports Fiscal 2009 Third Quarter Earnings

Air Products today reported income from continuing operations of $115 million, or diluted earnings per share from continuing operations of $0.54, for its fiscal third quarter ended June 30, 2009. These results included charges of $110 million, or $0.51 per share, for the company's global cost reduction plan, a customer bankruptcy and other asset actions, and a pension settlement.Excluding the impact of these items, income from continuing operations was $225 million, and diluted EPS was $1.05, down 24 and 22 percent, respectively, compared with the prior year. Approximately three-quarters of the fiscal third quarter global cost reduction plan is for severance and pension costs related to the elimination of approximately 1,150 positions from the company's global workforce. These reductions are targeted at continued cost and productivity efforts, including closure of certain manufacturing facilities. The remainder is for a write-down of certain assets held for sale to net realizable value. The global cost reduction plan is expected to reduce fixed costs by approximately $30 million in fiscal 2010, with annual benefits of $50 million in fiscal 2011 and beyond. The discussion of third quarter results in this release is based on non-GAAP comparisons. It excludes the impacts of the above items. A reconciliation can be found at the end of this release.* Third quarter revenues of $1,976 million decreased 28 percent from the prior year on weaker volumes, lower energy and raw material cost pass-throughs, and unfavorable currency. Underlying sales were down 11 percent. Operating income of $308 million declined 22 percent from the prior year on weaker volumes and unfavorable currency impacts, partially offset by lower operating and overhead costs.John McGlade, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, 'While we are still seeing the impact of the global recession on our volumes, we've seen signs of improvement during this quarter in some of our end markets, particularly in Electronics and Asia. The productivity and continuous improvement efforts of our employees are having an impact, as margins improved substantially both sequentially and versus prior year.'Third Quarter Segment Performance Merchant Gases sales of $883 million declined 19 percent from the prior year on weaker volumes across manufacturing end-markets globally and unfavorable currency, partially offset by favorable pricing. Operating income of $169 million declined 17 percent from the prior year on weaker volumes and unfavorable currency, partially offset by favorable pricing and cost performance. Tonnage Gases sales of $565 million were down 42 percent from the prior year, principally on lower energy and raw material cost pass-throughs, and to a lesser extent, weaker volumes in steel and chemical end-markets and unfavorable currency. Operating income of $88 million decreased 30 percent on weak volumes, customer outages, lower operating efficiencies, and unfavorable currency.Electronics and Performance Materials sales of $409 million declined 29 percent and operating income of $39 million decreased 45 percent from the prior year on significantly lower volumes. While Electronics sales increased 21 percent sequentially due to improved customer run rates, year-on-year sales were down 35 percent. Performance Materials volumes improved 26 percent sequentially, reflecting seasonal improvement and stronger Asian sales, but declined 23 percent from the prior year on weaker demand from coatings, autos, housing and other end markets.Equipment and Energy sales of $119 million were up 12 percent over the prior year on higher air separation unit activity. Operating income of $13 million increased from the prior year on favorable cost performance. OutlookMcGlade said, 'The global recession remains challenging; however, we believe the actions we are taking to drive improvement in costs are positioning the company for continued margin improvement. We are focused on and remain committed to achieving our 17 percent margin goal.'Air Products now expects fourth quarter EPS from continuing operations to be between $1.04 and $1.14 per share and full-year EPS from continuing operations to be between $3.95 and $4.05 per share, excluding the impact of disclosed items in the fiscal first and third quarters. Air Products serves customers in industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services. Founded in 1940, Air Products has built leading positions in key growth markets such as semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen, home healthcare services, natural gas liquefaction, and advanced coatings and adhesives.
Air Products Extends XeCovery(SM) Xenon Recovery Service to MEMS Manufacturers

The use of xenon difluoride in etching processes is gaining increased acceptance by manufacturers of MicroElectroMechanical Systems . However, the relatively high cost of the material continues to be a barrier to more widespread adoption. Now, Air Products has extended its XeCovery: xenon recovery service to recover xenon from XeF2-based etching processes, which will help stabilize and even lower the price of XeF2, noted Gene Karwacki, commercial development manager for XeCovery at Air Products, who was speaking at the SEMICON West 2009 Extreme Electronics TechXPOT.'Pricing for XeF2 is strongly influenced by the availability and pricing of xenon,' said Karwacki. 'Over the past two years, the market price for XeF2 has more than doubled because of the world-wide demand for xenon in other applications such as semiconductor manufacturing, plasma displays, lighting, and aerospace. For users and those considering using XeF2 for a MEMS process, XeCovery enables a more stable and lower cost structure for the material required for their process.' The XeCovery xenon recovery service is an on-site service that extracts xenon from process effluent streams. An enriched mixture of recovered xenon is compressed and stored. Full vessels are then transported offsite for distillation. Air Products assumes responsibility for owning, operating, and maintaining the units placed at a site, which limits a customer's investment only to costs associated with installation and utilities to operate the equipment.'By recovering the xenon from the waste stream, Air Products is recovering a valuable material using significantly less energy than what is needed to extract xenon from the atmosphere,' said Karwacki. 'Furthermore, Air Products can then use the recovered xenon to manufacture XeF2. A bundled XeCovery service and XeF2 molecule offering from Air Products provides an attractive solution for the MEMS market.'Air Products serves customers in industrial, energy, technology and healthcare markets worldwide with a unique portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services. Founded in 1940, Air Products has built leading positions in key growth markets such as semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen, home healthcare services, natural gas liquefaction, and advanced coatings and adhesives. The company is recognized for its innovative culture, operational excellence and commitment to safety and the environment. Air Products had fiscal 2008 revenues of $10.4 billion, operations in over 40 countries, and 21,000 employees around the globe.
