I even suggested that it was possible that we could exceed 400 “major” bankruptcies in 2009. According to Bankruptcydata.com, there have been 156 “major” filings thus far in 2009. Assuming that bankruptcies are equally distributed throughout the year, this puts us on pace for 312 bankruptcies. That is tracking well shy of my prediction. In fact, bankruptcies were down significantly from Q1 to Q2, as there were 90 bankruptcies in the first quarter but only 66 in the second. That stylized fact begs the question: Is that a “green shoot”[More...]

Several notable companies raised their dividends last week. Dividend raises are not only getting more frequent, but they also seem to be spreading globally as well. A dividend raise in this tough environment indicates confidence in the business and the ability to generate free chas flow. A strong cash flow also enables companies to fund future growth internally, rather than relying exclusively on the capital markets for growth.
Doug Kass: Why The Bears Are Wrong

Doug Kass believes the 666 S&P low was not only this bear market's bottom; but also a "generational" low. As always we are open to hearing both sides of the arguement and unlike most of the punditry Doug actually puts his money behind his mouth. He did make an excellent call for a bottom a few weeks ago; I am not satisfied that we won't revisit it later in the year but as I've been saying I am drinking Kool Aid (leaning long) for now - targeting S&P 870 at this point. I'm also moving quite firmly to the camp of double dip recession as the flood of money unleashed by our overlords will pump up some parts of the economy (basic supply/demand) - this will create excitement, bottom calls, some improvement in economic figures... but then we'll most likely see what is behind the facade later in 2010 as we see what true demand/supply is ex[More...]

Small Caps: It’s Time to Think Small by Louis Basenese, Advisory Panelist Associate Investment Director, The Oxford Club Wednesday, November 19, 2008: Issue #888 Over one million jobs vanished this year. Retail sales cratered for the eleventh consecutive month. Auto sales, and for that matter automakers, are headed for the junkyard. And there’s no sign of consumer confidence anywhere. It’s not official yet. Apparently the committee of “esteemed” economists at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) doesn’t get paid for timeliness. But the statistics don’t lie… we’re in a recession. And that’s got me giddier than an Obama supporter scoring an inauguration ticket. That’s right. I’m actually glad the economic data stinks. I often marvel at the fact that even from my remote location, I’m able to do research and submit copy over a broadband connection. Of course, 20 years ago we never would have thought of broadband penetration as a necessary component to our nation’s infrastructure. Back then most of us interacted with our televisions far more than with our computers. Now, it’s hard for most of us to imagine life without a high-speed Internet connection, especially if you work from home as I do. For millions of Americans, broadband is the enabler for telecommuting, giving[More...]

5 Dividend Stocks Increasing Their Payments In This Tough Market

Last week we saw further market volatility as major indexes continued extending their losses for October, which could turn out to be the worst month for the markets since 1938. There was an announcement from S&P which decreased the expected dividend growth for 2008 to 1.20% and also provided a cautionary outlook for dividends and earnings in 2009. Despite all the doom and gloom there were several notable dividend increases over the past week. Microchip Technology (MCHP), a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, announced an increase in the dividend to 33.9 cents per share. Microchip initiated quarterly cash dividend payments in the third quarter of fiscal year 2003 and has increased the cash dividend by 9.4% from the dividend level one year ago. The stock currently yields a whooping 6.30%. I[More...]
