More Pain For Auto Suppliers

The spillover from D-3's empty wallets is beginning to really hurt domestic auto suppliers. First, Ford spinoff Visteon, which last week barely made a $16 million bond interest payment, last night joined Lear (which Carl Icahn tried to acquire unsuccesfully in early 2007) in announcing it would likely receive going concern language from its auditors. "The inclusion of such a paragraph in such report would result in defaults under certain indebtedness of the Company, which defaults, if not cured or waived prior to the expiration of the applicable grace period, would result in an event of default under the Company’s principal U.S. senior secured credit facilities.
Headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (PHG) is one of the world's largest electronics companies and the biggest in Europe, with sales of 27 billion in 2007 and 12.4 billion in 1H08. The company has worked to improve its cost structure, as its EBITA margins remained flat along with modest revenue performance despite the weaker-than-expected dollar. Based on these results, we are maintaining our revenue estimates for 2008. We continue to rate the shares of PHG a Hold with a price target of $28.50 per share over the next six months. This amounts to between 6.7x-6.9x our new 2008 EPS estimate of $4.19. Udayan Mukherjee contributed to this report.

In the reported 2008 second quarter, Penske Automotive Group's (PAG) earnings from continuing operations per diluted share were $0.42, down from $0.43 in the year-ago period. Revenue was steady at $3.4 billion. Same-store sales decreased 6% on new vehicles down 8% and used vehicles up 7%. The Company currently projects earnings from continuing operations for the year to be in the range of $1.54 to $1.60. Penske is well positioned among the auto retailer peer group. Its specialty and luxury product mix offers opportunity for long-term growth. Additionally, we are encouraged by positive same-store sales in used vehicles. However, rising interest rates, challenging industry conditions and a leveraged balance sheet dampen our outlook on the stock. Thus, we rate the shares a Hold with a six-month target price of $14.00. The company historically has grown 6% faster than its peers,[More...]
