Why A Long, Slow Recovery Might Not Be A Bad Thing

The market is ripping higher this morning on the combination of heightened skepticism among investors that the market was overbought and in need of a pullback and the better than expected jobs report. Nonfarm payrolls declined -247,000, but this was much better than the -325k that economists were forecasting. Also, the unemployment rate ticked down to 9.4% vs. 9.6% consensus, and I heard many whisper numbers that it would actually rise to 9.7%. Today's jobs report showed the fewest job losses since August 2008, and although job losses are never a positive for the overall economy, this report is another solid sign that the worst of the recession is behind us and that the economy is at least on a slow path to recovery. Last weekend I attended some festivities for a friend's birthday that included dinner at the Landmark Buffet at the Ameristar Casino and Hotel (ASCA) in St. Charles, Missouri. Along with spending some time with good friends, I was also especially interested to see how busy the casino was on a Friday night. If you simply looked at the stock prices of the major casino companies in the United States, you would have predicted the place would be empty. Gaming stocks have been crushed lately on consumer spending worries. ASCA stock, for example, is down about 45%, from a high of $38 to the current quote of $21 per share.Such large drops are fairly surprising given that gaming stocks are widely believed to be fairly recession-proof. Rather than take lavish vacations, or even hop on a plane heading to Vegas, people tend to scale back and just drive to a local riverboat casino instead.[More...]

Today, Wall Street baron Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) announced that it is making, along with some outside investors, a $3 billion investment in one of its hedge funds. This is certainly some news to chew on for both Goldman investors as well as investors in the GEO fund that Goldman is backing up the truck on.However, there was more to Goldman's move than just pumping extra equity into a struggling fund. In its press release -- and reiterated in its conference call -- Goldman said that they "believe the current values that the market is assigning to the assets underlying various funds represent a discount that is not supported by the fundamentals."[More...]

Dec. 1--Gaming stocks were sluggish in November as investors tried to judge the repercussions of third-quarter results and anticipate the effect the opening of CityCenter will have on the Strip.
Only three of the nine gaming companies charted by Las Vegas-based financial consultant Applied Analysis saw an increase in their average daily stock prices in November compared to October.
"The latest monthly performance within the gaming sector was impacted by the interpretation of recent third-quarter earnings reports, speculation about expansions domestically and internationally, and other industry news," Applied Analysis principal Brian Gordon said in a report to clients.
