It really has been a struggle to find new opportunities that have real growth potential to them; it seems much of the lauded U.S. "industry creation" must be happening in the private side as finding solid public companies, that can sustain growth at 25%+ has been difficult for a long while. I've been interested in the tech space here for a few weeks, but most of the names blasting off are names coming out of cyclical troughs - as I've said most of the technology space is an over hyped "industrial" theme, but covered in silicon to make it sexy. Verizon: Surviving but Not Thriving

Verizon Communications (VZ) released quarterly earnings that were up 15%, and while that sounds like an outstanding quarter its not exactly as that headline suggests. As so often happens, the bottom-line has been finessed a bit because of one-time charges. When excluding the one-time charges, earnings dropped slightly from $.62 in this quarter last year to $.61 in this quarter. The company was inline with consensus estimates, and was able to increase revenue by 3.4%. Verizon-Alltel Merger Gets Green Light from FCC

The Federal regulators following the DOJ’s approval last week have approved the $28.1 billion merger of Verizon Wireless (VZ) with wireless carrier Alltel, announced in June. The combination of both companies creates the nation’s largest wireless carrier and represents a strategically powerful collection of assets in the communications industry, which despite economic conditions - continues to remain an exciting growth market. New money infuses new life into Xata stock

Dec. 5--The stock of Xata Corp. rose nearly 12 percent Friday, to $2.80 per share, on news that it has secured $30 million in new equity capital, is planning a $20 million acquisition and has achieved improved performance in fiscal 2009.
In an interview, Xata CEO Jay Coughlan said Technology Crossover Ventures and Trident Capital, an existing investor, have invested $30 million to acquire more than a third of the company in a private deal at $3 per share.
The investment will fuel Xata's $20 million cash-and-stock acquisition of Canada-based Turnpike Global Technologies, a fleet-management system that Coughlan said will allow Xata to work with fleets of 100 or fewer trucks.

Dec. 3--WASHINGTON -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and three Michigan business executives are to be among those representing the state today at President Barack Obama's jobs forum, with an afternoon's worth of discussions on how to get hiring jump-started.
Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis are to kick off the forum at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House at 1:20 p.m. Obama is to lead a discussion following breakout sessions on several topics.

A tiny Texas plane maker says exports make jobs soar

Dec. 3--WASHINGTON -- When David Ickert appears at the White House today, he'll have a simple message for a president seeking ideas to create jobs: Promote exports.
Ickert's small company, Air Tractor, exemplifies the lesson the Obama administration is trying to teach trade skeptics as it tackles the latest effort to address unemployment.
Air Tractor, an airplane manufacturer based in a small town south of Wichita Falls, says foreign sales have enabled it to withstand the worst effects of the recession.

Schwarzenegger releases report on effects of climate change

SACRAMENTO, Calif. _ In 2100, San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf would become Fisherman's Bay, the baseball diamond at AT&T Park would flood and two major Bay Area airports would better serve seaplanes under a climate change model unveiled Wednesday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Google.
The governor released a new report determining that global warming, left unabated, will lead to higher sea levels, greater wildfire risks and decreased water supply over the next century, based on research compiled by the California Energy Commission.
The governor and legislative Democrats in 2006 approved a new law requiring California to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2020.

Department of Labor study finds no health hazards in courthouse

Dec. 2--Despite ongoing controversy regarding the replacement and sealing of leaking windows in the courthouse, a recent study by the Oklahoma Department of Labor found the Rogers Courthouse to be safe.
Monday, commissioners acknowledged a report on safety and health inspection performed by Irving Love, Compliance Inspector, Oklahoma Dept. of Labor and read the letter containing the results of that report into the public record.
The report indicated "no serious hazards or program deficiencies were identified" and that no "imminent hazards found."

Dec. 2--WASHINGTON -- Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and a trio of executives will be among the group representing Michigan at Thursday's jobs forum at the White House, with some 130 business leaders, elected officials and experts gathering for talks on how best to get hiring jump-started.
Michigan's group includes Bing, Dow Corning Chairwoman and CEO Stephanie Burns; Dow Chemical Chairman, President and CEO Andrew Liveris, and Noel Cuellar, president and CEO of Primera Plastics, a precision injection moulding company based in Zeeland.

Logue wants air rules to face popular vote

Dec. 1--Assemblyman Dan Logue is looking to put AB 32, the 2006 state legislation meant to address emissions and global warming on a statewide basis, before voters next year.
Logue, who's joined with government reform measure veteran Ted Costa in the effort, said he wants a ballot measure next November that would tie implementation of AB 32 to the state unemployment rate.
If the measure Logue proposes makes the ballot and passes, AB 32 would be suspended until the state unemployment rate drops to 5.5 percent or lower for four consecutive quarters.
