Starnet Networks (STAR) 3G Player with 4G Potential

It really has been a struggle to find new opportunities that have real growth potential to them; it seems much of the lauded U.S. "industry creation" must be happening in the private side as finding solid public companies, that can sustain growth at 25%+ has been difficult for a long while. I've been interested in the tech space here for a few weeks, but most of the names blasting off are names coming out of cyclical troughs - as I've said most of the technology space is an over hyped "industrial" theme, but covered in silicon to make it sexy. Verizon: Surviving but Not Thriving

Verizon Communications (VZ) released quarterly earnings that were up 15%, and while that sounds like an outstanding quarter its not exactly as that headline suggests. As so often happens, the bottom-line has been finessed a bit because of one-time charges. When excluding the one-time charges, earnings dropped slightly from $.62 in this quarter last year to $.61 in this quarter. The company was inline with consensus estimates, and was able to increase revenue by 3.4%. Verizon-Alltel Merger Gets Green Light from FCC

The Federal regulators following the DOJ’s approval last week have approved the $28.1 billion merger of Verizon Wireless (VZ) with wireless carrier Alltel, announced in June. The combination of both companies creates the nation’s largest wireless carrier and represents a strategically powerful collection of assets in the communications industry, which despite economic conditions - continues to remain an exciting growth market. Nov. 6--Verizon Wireless is still kicking itself in the headset for declining Apple's offer two years ago to become the exclusive United States distributor of the iPhone.
Now, Verizon looks to the moon, the stars and Google for an answer: The $199 Droid, which debuts today as the first phone to run Google's Android 2.0 operating system.

Nov. 5--The wireless industry gathered Wednesday in Dallas to talk about the next generation of high-speed mobile connectivity and promote a new industry standard.
The LTE Americas conference, which continues through the rest of this week, focuses on a specific technology being adopted by many wireless companies to build the fourth-generation, or 4G, wireless network.
Much of the 4G technology is being designed or tested in the Dallas area.

Arkansas firm buys NuVox

Nov. 4--NuVox Inc., the last telecommunications company founded by prolific St. Louis entrepreneur Robert Brooks, agreed Tuesday to sell itself to Windstream Corp. of Little Rock, Ark. The purchase price is $643 million in cash, stock and assumed debt.
Windstream is a phone company that operates in rural areas of 16 states; it was spun off from Alltel in 2006.
NuVox hasn't been based in St. Louis since 2004, when it merged with NewSouth Communications and moved its headquarters to Greenville, S.C.

Nov. 2--After a few false starts, WiMax broadband service arrives in Chicago this week, giving residents access to a technology that promises superfast Internet speeds from any location.
Sprint Nextel Corp. is expected to announce Monday that it has launched 4G in the Chicago area.
"The speed, performance and productivity that 4G gives you are so incredible," said Todd Rowley, Sprint's vice president for 4G.

Oct. 31--The Mac and PC characters on the well-known Apple television commercials may seem civil, but Microsoft and other tech companies are launching new projects to try and steal some of the appeal from the iPod and iPhone producer.
After loads of problems associated with its Vista operating system, Microsoft hopes its new Windows 7 will help recover some cool points with consumers.
