Earlier this month, Oclaro, Inc (OCLR) held a conference call to discuss its business going forward. Oclaro was formed by a merger of Bookham and Avanex in end-April. Bookham (BKHM) announced its fiscal Q4 results recently. Although there was nothing encouraging in the release per se, the bigger news was the prospective combination of it and Avanex (AVNX). Note that Avanex attempted a merger with Oplink (OPLK, Hold) back in 2002, which didn't go through because the Boards of the companies couldn't come to terms. Avanex Corp. Gets New CEO

Avanex Corporation, a global provider of optical network solutions, today announced the appointment of Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa as CEO, President, and Director. Dr. Barbarossa has been with the company for 8 years, serving as Chief Technical Officer and Sr. V.P., and, since July, as Interim CEO. He has also been named as a member of the Avanex Board of Directors. Prior to Avanex, Dr. Barbarossa held senior management roles in the Optical Networking Division of Agilent Technologies, and in the Network Product Group of Lucent Technologies. Before that he was with AT&T Labs, and a research associate with Bell Labs. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, U.K., and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bari in Italy. Dell, Inc. (DELL) posted better-than-expected revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2009 as aggressive pricing that helped drive unit sales. On a positive note, it does appear that price cuts were successful in taking some share, and operating expense reductions are ahead of expectations. On August 28, Dell released results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2009, ended August 1, 2008. Revenue for the quarter was $16,434 million in the quarter, ahead of our $15,958 million estimate and 11.2% above the $14,776 million reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2008.
