Chalco Lowers Aluminum Capacity - Analyst Blog

Aluminum Corporation of China, Ltd. (ACH), or Chalco, is the third-largest alumina producer in the world by output. The company expects to benefit from the long-term growth of the Chinese economy as well as through capacity expansion, acquisitions, and joint ventures. Chalco is investing in its own mine production and is also diversifying its production base by expanding overseas. However, higher raw material and power costs forced the company to reduce its aluminum capacity by 1 million tons in 2008. Moreover, the company reported a 93% fall in its net profits in the third quarter of 2008. Trading Earnings: After AA reports, Investors Might Need a Drink.

Alcoa (AA) is set to report earnings after the market closes on Tuesday, October 7. Alcoa is the world leader in the production and management of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum and alumina combined, through its active and growing participation in all major aspects of the industry. AA is expected to earn a profit of 54 cents per share for its 3rd quarter. We expect the gaming retailer to announce earnings that will miss investors’ and analysts’ expectations as estimates have been dropping like a rock throughout the quarter. In light of the current global economic conditions and falling aluminum prices, we believe it will be difficult for Alcoa to paint a pretty picture going forward. Verisign, Inc. (VRSN) reported $303 million in revenues during Q2, up 17.1% y/y but down 14.4% q/q. Revenues from core business (Domain Names, SSL Certificates, and Identity and Authentication Services (IAS), came in at $233 million. GAAP EPS came in at ($0.35) for the quarter. Pro-forma EPS of $0.25 exceeded our estimate by $0.03. Core business generated a non-GAAP operating margin of 34.2%, up from 30.3% registered in Q1 2008. Growth in the naming business slowed down. The management provided Q3 revenue guidance of $236-241 million. They remain confident of exiting 2008 with an operating margin of 35%. VeriSign is trading at 31.7 times our reduced 2008 earnings estimate of $0.98 per share. Duke Researchers Tout Wood As a Sustainable Energy Resource

Mar. 14--DURHAM -- Increased use of sustainable wood energy could yield long-term economic, social and environmental benefits in many regions of the United States, according to newly published analysis by a Duke University-led team of experts.
Our forests could sustainably produce at least 368 million dry tons of wood for energy annually, yet it's really not on the national radar screen when we talk about renewable energy sources," said Daniel Richter, lead author of the study and professor of soils and forest ecology at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.
An article detailing the benefits of increased U.S. investment in sustainable wood energy, written by Richter and a multi-institutional team of ecologists, engineers, forest conservationists and energy specialists, appeared in the Policy Forum section of the March 13 issue of the journal Science.
