Betting On Government Relief Stocks: A Real Bad Idea

Established on January 5, 2009, the NASDAQ OMX government relief index that tracks companies that are participating in the US government's financial relief plan (symbol: QGRI) is down 36% since inception. The US Treasury is in the process of becoming the proud owner of some 36% of Citigroup's common stock, after pouring some $45 billion into the company. Analysts say the U.S. government’s third attempt to help rescue Citigroup Inc. won’t stanch the company’s losses, which will continue to swell and may lead the bank to require more money in coming months. Investors that have stuck with Citigroup on the hope that government intervention would turn around the company have lost some 97% of their investment since the peak in the stock in 2007. How about a double short on the NASDAQ OMX government relief index? The pattern for AIG is the same. Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.[More...]

Barnes Group posts 3Q profit drop

BRISTOL, Conn. - Barnes Group Inc. said Friday its third-quarter profit fell 61 percent as the global economic downturn continued to dampen the aerospace and industrial parts maker's results.
Net income fell to $10.9 million, or 20 cents per share, in the three months ended Sept. 30 from $27.8 million, or 49 cents per share, during the year-earlier period.
The results included restructuring charges of $3.4 million before tax, or $1.7 million after tax.

Barnes Group Lays Off 95 Workers, 30 In State

Oct. 31--The weak economy, a nearly two-month strike at The Boeing Co. and a reorganization have led to at least 95 layoffs at the Barnes Group during October, 30 of them in Connecticut, the company said Thursday.
The cuts, which the company said were mostly complete, amount to about 2 percent of the Bristol company's global workforce and 4 percent of its Connecticut jobs.
The cuts affect both hourly and salaried workers, mostly in its former aerospace segment.
