Via Yves Smith, John Hempton analyzes the quarterly results of Bank of America (so-so) and Fannie Mae (terrible). The underlying issue is that bank quarter-to-quarter results are largely driven by the amount of provisions they take against future loan losses. You can think of this as a very rough approximation to marking-to-market — instead of waiting for the loans to default, you estimate how many loans will default in the future (that estimate should change as the economic situation changes) and put that amount of money into reserves. BofA (BAC) Having Trouble Finding CEO Due To Charlotte's Provincial Image

It turns out that the main reason why Bank of America is unable to find someone willing to jump into Ken Lewis' hot shoes has nothing to do with BofA toxic balance sheet and everything to do with proximity to Carnegie Hall, the Lower East Side and any of a plethora of Daniel Boulud restaurants. Bloomberg reports that as BAC continues its search for a CEO replacement it is now willing to let the fall guy's replacement be domiciled out of New York. Whether that means that the Charlotte, NC-based firm is looking to relocate entirely to the Big Apple, and whether Mel Watt is aware that he no longer needs to be the lap dog of the firm's soon to no longer be landed interests, is yet to be determined.[More...]

I have been following insurer, Conseco (CNO) for a good 4 months as I looked over potential "home run" plays (or on the other hand, a strike out) and was surprised to see hedge fund megastar John Paulson swoop in for a 9.9% stake about 3 weeks ago. I've been watching the name since, and it has given back all of the huge gain it experienced when news of the Paulson investment broke. (filled the gap) There is a nice entry point here, right above a key moving average - however the company reports Wednesday which will provide the normal hectic volatility so we're most likely going to sit and wait.[More...]

Nov. 7--At a posh Florida resort in February 2007, Ken Lewis unveiled Bank of America's aggressive new strategy to a roomful of Wall Street analysts.
"We do not have to acquire to meet our financial goals," Lewis said.
And despite saying the bank didn't need to buy to succeed, Lewis launched a deal-making spree a few weeks later by agreeing to buy Chicago's LaSalle Bank for $21 billion in cash.
