Looking at tons of charts this weekend, there is similar patterns on various charts. The majority of stocks have declined the past 3 days and are nearing support of their previous break out highs. The patterns look to SPX as it has the potential to move to test its August highs, but has resistance above it from its breakout highs which it broke below.[More...]

Hey, friends. My piece on AIG is done, and I will be posting over the next few days, and resume a more normal posting schedule. Here it is: Summary Aside from the mortgage insurers, the P&C subsidiaries were basically sound, though with some issues such as capital stacking, affiliated assets, etc., as mentioned below. The non-mortgage P&C subsidiaries didn’t have a great 2008, but they would have survived as standalone entities. The life and mortgage subsidiaries are another matter. Without the help of the US Government, many of them would have failed. Even now, given the levels of affiliated assets, capital stacking, deferred tax assets, etc., they are not in great shape now should there be another surprise. Profitability is likely to be lower in the future than in the banner years of the middle of the 2000s[More...]

There is no phonier an argument in the capital market today than the one that says China’s economy has collapsed. It will be over the day that the US banks start writing LC’s. The import-export business is based on Letters of Credit issued by banks. A government bank could be issuing these letters of credit rather than pumping taxpayer money into TARP and then asking the banks to grease the skids for importers-exporters. Looking ahead to 2009, Consumer Staples should continue to be one of the best performing sectors in the market, given its strong fundamental macroeconomic backdrop relative to the other sectors in the S&P 500. We can sit and argue as to whether or not the market will go back up or further deteriorate in 2009, but given the unstable credit and the uncertain housing and labor markets, it is hard to say just what will happen and how much is already priced in. I have been looking at (and investing in a few) income-related funds in addition to current ETF bond and preferred/higher yield securities throwing off income within my portfolio. From where I sit, it appears that the online advertising business has not yet fallen off a cliff. But what happens when ad buyers start spending 2009 ad budgets instead of working off the end of 2008 ad budgets that were set in a different economic environment? Okay, we are all nerve wracked here. At least those of us dumb enough to be on board this thing. :-) Here is HUI with TRIX confirming the MACD, bullish divergence and that #@%! downtrend that needs to be broken. Getting close but pardon me if I am not overconfident. I am not, and that's probably how it should be. A break of the downtrend would become much more significant with a break above the noted resistance at 225 as mentioned before. Clothing retailer Quiksliver (ZQK) completed its sale of Rossignol for $40M Euros. Sales of Rossignol apparel and winter accessories hadn’t been performing as well as the company expected over the past 2 years since Acquiring the french company. Banner Bancorp Trims Loss

Banner Bank parent Banner Corp. on July 29 reported a net loss of $16.5 million for the second quarter compared to a net loss of $52.3 million for the second quarter of 2008.
Current results include a $45 million provision for loan losses and a $2.1 million special assessment from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The current quarter also saw an $11 million net gain from the valuation of financial instruments carried at fair value.
"Similar to recent quarters, our significant provision for loan losses during the quarter reflects material levels of non- performing loans and net charge-offs, particularly for loans for the construction of one-to-four family homes and for acquisition and development of land for residential properties," President and CEO D. Michael Jones said in a release.
