Corporate Job Losses Mounting:

“Job losses are never desired by employees, but necessary for investors.” This is a quote from one of my university professors that I still have highlighted in my strategic management notes which I read from time to time to reacquaint myself with certain concepts. The media, almost daily, has been heard announcing significant job losses at all sized corporations across the world as companies attempt to better position themselves for the deteriorating economic environment. In the past week Microsoft (MSFT) announced of 5,000 job cuts, Rio Tinto (RTP) 1,000 (total of 14,000 during the past month), BHP Billiton (BHP) 6,000 and BCE (BCE) announcing early retirement incentives for 1,500 employees. While publicly and internally this looks negatively upon the management of companies announcing these layoffs investors[More...]

Things I learned this year

As my second last post of the year, I wanted to share some of the things I learned this year about personal finance and life. It sure has been a crazy year with a lot of learning experiences to be sure. Personal finance lessons are life lessons and vice versa. People tend to separate their “money life” from their “non-money life” but they intersect. The lessons you learn in personal finance and the same lessons to be taken in life. For example, I learned this year the virtue of patience. As I wrote yesterday I jumped in early twice in the market- the second time buying BCE after the deal was first announced as potentially being off- when waiting a few more weeks would have made me better off. You judge people in bad times and not good times. This is one of my favorite sayings in life but it rang so true this year. I made a comment to my[More...]

In return, Hexion will receive a billion dollars in total, for breakup fees, as well as the settlement of legal claims which Huntsman had filed against Apollo, after Apollo tried to back out of the deal as the credit crisis picked up steam. Apollo will pay Huntsman a $325 million dollar break-up fee, $425 million to settle the legal claims and affiliates of Apollo Management will[More...]

Nine Notable Dividend Increases

Several large companies announced dividend increases over the past week. One of the most notable bullish calls came from the telecom sectors as AT&T (T) showed confidence in its business model by increasing its dividend payment to shareholders for the twenty fifth consecutive years. Despite the tough macroeconomic conditions AT&T (T) is still committed to raising its quarterly dividend. The board announced a 2.5% increase of the quarterly payment to to $0.41/share. The stock currently yields 5.70%. One thing that still concerns me with AT&T however is the high current dividend payout ratio. You could check my analysis of AT&T from this link.
Sellers In Control

I went through a lot of charts this evening, and came out of the experience feeling quite bearish. A half trillion dollar stimulus package in China prompted brief buying on Monday morning, but since then we have seen steady selling. Perhaps we are revisiting the scenario of forced selling by hedge funds and mutual funds. Whatever the case, the sellers are in control here, and I see few stocks I would consider buying. Despite the selling, there remains considerable bullish sentiment, I assume because "stocks are cheap". <br[More...]

Should I Worry About Too Great Of A Dividend Yield?

Dividend yields are “sexy” numbers in the world of dividend investing (which, by in large, is an unexciting, but lucrative, subset of equity investing). Dividend investors tend to gravitate towards it because it is an easy to understand number of a rate of return at any particular period of time. But is there such a thing as too great of a dividend yield? Let’s start at the beginning. Dividend yield is percentage determined the formula = annual dividend per share/share price. It stands to reason then that dividend yields increase in one of two manners: The dividend increase is greater than the share price increase; or The dividend remains constant but the share price is falling. It is harder to affect the first than the second and the second tends to occur during down markets when share prices fall rapidly while the dividend paid remains the same. As we are all seeing when[More...]

Federal Government Will Back Bank To Bank Loans?

Jim Flaherty is predicted to announce this to help ease the credit crunch, but is this going to help? We shall see, but it isn’t bad news, except for tax payers like us, who are now on the hook for these loans as well. This whole “bail out” thing seems to be another possible area where governments will overspend and this will lead to higher taxes. Stock Decline ContinuesNot that you hadn’t noticed, but, stock prices continue to drop on sentiment (and not much else), as we seem to be in a “shame spiral” in terms of investing, where folks are getting out now just for the sake of getting out. Yes, some companies are announcing pretty shaky numbers, but not enough to justify this kind of sell off.Is it time to buy yet? Not sure, call me in six months, I’ll tell you whether now was a good time to buy.Ontario Deficit[More...]
