Doug Kass: Why The Bears Are Wrong

Doug Kass believes the 666 S&P low was not only this bear market's bottom; but also a "generational" low. As always we are open to hearing both sides of the arguement and unlike most of the punditry Doug actually puts his money behind his mouth. He did make an excellent call for a bottom a few weeks ago; I am not satisfied that we won't revisit it later in the year but as I've been saying I am drinking Kool Aid (leaning long) for now - targeting S&P 870 at this point. I'm also moving quite firmly to the camp of double dip recession as the flood of money unleashed by our overlords will pump up some parts of the economy (basic supply/demand) - this will create excitement, bottom calls, some improvement in economic figures... but then we'll most likely see what is behind the facade later in 2010 as we see what true demand/supply is ex[More...]

Nine Notable Dividend Increases

Several large companies announced dividend increases over the past week. One of the most notable bullish calls came from the telecom sectors as AT&T (T) showed confidence in its business model by increasing its dividend payment to shareholders for the twenty fifth consecutive years. Despite the tough macroeconomic conditions AT&T (T) is still committed to raising its quarterly dividend. The board announced a 2.5% increase of the quarterly payment to to $0.41/share. The stock currently yields 5.70%. One thing that still concerns me with AT&T however is the high current dividend payout ratio. You could check my analysis of AT&T from this link.
An Uneasy Rebound for Fund Companies

To a great extent, all actively managed equity mutual funds have benefited from the stock market rally over the past three months.

But enthusiasm toward stocks has cooled in the past two weeks as the markets more carefully weigh the considerable obstacles that the U.S. economy needs to surmount before it can return to health.

While the pace of money flows into equity mutual funds seems to have picked up in June from April and May, that's probably a bearish sign for stocks, according to TrimTabs Investment Research in Sausalito, Calif. That's not only because the amount of cash on the sidelines has been reduced, but because mutual fund investors tend to invest heavily in the late stage of rallies, says Conrad Gann, president of TrimTabs.

Tamara Greene Lawyer Can't View Texts: Judge in Stripper Case: They Don't Meet Standard

Feb. 14--A lawyer for the family of slain stripper Tamara Greene won't get to see 13 text messages that initially were believed to offer insight into her 2003 killing, a federal judge ruled Friday.

U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen ruled that the messages do not meet the standard to be viewed by attorney Norman Yatooma, meaning the judge most likely did not find them relevant to Yatooma's lawsuit against the City of Detroit, ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his top aide Christine Beatty, police officials and others filed on behalf of Greene's teenage son and other family members.

Freep.com first reported last month that federal magistrates reviewing messages singled out the 13 text messages from hundreds that were exchanged on city pagers the day Greene was slain in April 2003.
