The indices followed through on yesterday’s late comeback rally and gapped up strongly early on, backed off and retested the gap successfully, and then came on and rallied strongly into the mid-afternoon before a last 90-minute rollover brought them off the highs.

Indices Rally, But Give Back A Big Chunk Of Post-FOMC Gains

The indices had a volatile session, particularly in the afternoon after the FOMC made their announcement. But the day started off with a bang at the get-go, with a very strong rally that saw the Nasdaq 100 run from 1594 to 1625 inside the first 1-1 1/2 hours. The S&P 500 at that point ran from 993 to 1008. They spent the next couple hours backing and filling and consolidating, rolled over after the FOMC announcement, and then snapped back after holding secondary support sharply. It appeared there was massive short covering as the indices gapped up intraday. After another 45 minutes of consolidation, they failed to break out, and in the last 20 minutes rolled over sharply to take back a big chunk of the gains. Still, net on the day the Dow was up 120 to 9361.61, after reaching as high as 9424 and change. The S&P 500 closed at 1005.81, up 11.46, but had a 1012.78 high earlier, and the Nasdaq 100 was 15 points[More...]

Back-To-Back Losing Sessions

The indices continued to move lower Tuesday, following up to the action late Friday and Monday. We’ve now had back-to-back downdays to start the week. We’d anticipated that, but also think the market’s headed even lower. The day started out with a gap down. A sharp move lower ensured, and then the indices stabilized in the 1588-90 zone the Nasdaq 100 and near 992-93 zone on S&P 500. They did try to stage an afternoon rally, and were the near the afternoon rally highs with about 15 minutes to go when they suddenly rolled over and plunged hard to take back some of those gains and close lower on the day. Net on the day the Dow was down 96.50 to 9241.45, the S&P 500 down 12.75 at 994.35, and the Nasdaq 100 down 15.74 at 1594.69. Advance-declines were decidedly negative by nearly 3 to 1 on New York and by about 2 ½ to 1 on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 4 ½ to 1[More...]

Rally Refuses To Give Way

We certainly had another up-day, but it all came in the last 20 minutes or so. The market opened lower in the morning, rallied steadily until mid-day to new highs, getting up to 1007 on the S&P 500. The indices then rolled over, but the SPX managed to hold 1000 three times in the afternoon, while the NDX also held support around the 1618 area, near the morning lows. A last 20-minute short-covering frenzy took the market up sharply and they closed in the plus column. Net on the day the Dow closed up 33.63 to 9320.19, the S&P 500 up 3.02 to 1005.65, and the Nasdaq 100 up just 0.37 at 1628.49. However, that was 12 points off its low. Advance-declines were 3 to 2 positive on New York and about 4 to 3 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was better than 2 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of 1 1/4 billion. Nasdaq traded over 2.1 billion and had a 4 to 3 positive volume[More...]

Thursday’s session was a terrific follow-up to yesterday’s very strong session. The indices opened strong, backed and filled and coiled for about half the session, and then got very quiet around lunch hour. When they were unable to break intraday moving averages, trendlines or price support, the indices started to accelerate in the afternoon, particularly when well-known economist Nouriel Roubini, who’d been a bear, said he thinks we’ve seen an economic bottom and turned the corner. That triggered buying. The indices spiked up in late afternoon trading, getting up to nearly 1522 on the NDX and nearly 944 on the SPX. In the last 10 minutes they pulled back sharply, but still ended up quite positive on the day. Net on the day the Dow was up 95.61 to 8711.82, the S&P 500 up 8.06 at 940.74 and the Nasdaq 100 up nearly 18 at 1518.87.
