Citi's good news lifts Dow by 379
NEW YORK - Wall Street woke up and posted its best performance of the year Tuesday, finding a badly needed glimmer of optimism in the most unlikely of places: Citigroup is managing to turn a profit.
The 379-point gain for the Dow Jones average, a rally of almost 6 percent, was a welcome break from almost constant selling.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. | Shareholders of Merrill Lynch & Co. and Bank of America Corp. on Friday approved the investment bank's sale to Bank of America, a move that will create the nation's largest financial- services company .
Bank of America shareholders approved the deal later in the day.
The purchase combines Bank of America, the largest U.S. bank by deposits, with the world's largest brokerage, linking Bank of America's huge customer base with Merrill's investment-banking services.

Brown-Forman Achieves Highest Year-Over-Year Score Increase Among All Companies Rated By the Human Rights Campaign

Brown-Forman (NYSE:BFB)(NYSE:BFA) received a very good score of 85 points out of 100 in this year's Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an increase of 65 points over last year's tally of only 20 points.
The 65-point swing represents the highest score increase achieved by any of the nearly 600 companies evaluated in successive years for their policies and practices affecting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) employees.
Brown-Forman's CEI score escalated in 2009 because the company implemented domestic partner benefits regardless of gender or sexual orientation; created employee resource groups for GLBT, African-American, Hispanic, and female employees; is requiring mandatory training of all employees on diversity and sexual orientation in the workplace; amended its nondiscrimination policy to include transgender and sexual identity expression; and stipulated that its travel & entertainment and relocation policies could not exclude GLBT employees and/or their partners on that basis.

Brown-Forman Shareholders Hold Annual Meeting

At their annual meeting today, Brown-Forman (NYSE:BFA)(NYSE:BFB) stockholders elected directors for the coming year and re-approved the performance measures under the Brown-Forman 2004 Omnibus Compensation Plan.
In his remarks to shareholders, Presiding Board Chairman Geo. Garvin Brown IV thanked former directors Barry Bramley, Donald Calder, and Matthew Simmons, all of whom retired since the 2008 annual meeting, for their many contributions to the company and acknowledged John Cook, a new independent director attending his first meeting of shareholders.
Brown-Forman Chief Executive Officer Paul Varga told shareholders that considering the global economic recession, the company performed well in fiscal 2009.
