Sellers Flood The Market, Driving ARMS Index and VIX Higher

Selling pressure at the open is dwarfing buy orders by a huge margin. The retails sales report came in weaker than expected, and renewed concerns about banks are the main culprits for the weakness. In early trading, the ARMS Index (which measures selling pressure) hit an extreme level of 4.40. Downside volume on the NYSE hit 98%, and the volatility index (VIX) spiked +18% to 51 as fear has resurfaces for the time being. The last time we saw readings this high, the Dow was down some 600 points, so I guess the fact that it is down -250 now could be seen as a slight positive. December retail sales dropped -2.7% month/month, which was more than the -1.2% economists were looking for. This reflects the sharp pullback by consumers in the current environment, as well as higher unemployment levels seen recently. <br[More...]

ANALYSIS: Falklands: The final frontier

Dec. 3--For a 20th century punctuated by truly bloody global conflicts, the battle for the Falkland Islands in 1982 is a historical peculiarity.

The Falklands Conflict -- Britain and Argentina, of course, never actually declared war on each other though they still managed to kill more than 900 servicemen between them -- has among historians of the Left been regarded as a cynical jingoistic ploy by Margaret Thatcher: the Prime Minister happily participating in a war to fire up her wilting ratings to the point she won a second General Election the next year.

Fevered talk in private investor chatrooms is that the British-owned Falklands will prove to be one of the last great frontier oil provinces of the world, a region so rich in hydrocarbons that it might eclipse the UK's North Sea oil and gas bonanza.

Nov. 25--Anadarko Petroleum spokesman Mark Hanley said his company will not drill in the Brooks Range foothills during the winter exploration season, according to Petroleum News.

Earlier this year the company, with its partners Petro-Canada and BG, completed two years of foothills exploration drilling on a group of natural gas leases around Umiat, in a region that the company calls the Gubik Complex.

And the deferral of the well test should not have much impact on the time frame for Anadarko's overall multiyear, multiwell foothills exploration program, Hanley said.
