Spotlight On: Restaurants

Spotlight On: Restaurants

The restaurant industry is experiencing significant damage from the contraction of the economy as consumers continue to cut back on discretionary spending. At the beginning of 2009, the food service industry consulting firm Technomic forecast industry nominal growth of -2.2 percent. That estimate is probably too conservative. In June, the National Restaurant Association confirmed that challenges persisted for this industry and that same store sales and traffic continued to soften. We can expect to see an increase in bankruptcy filings as over-leveraged chains begin to violate loan covenants.[More...]

Cramer Takes On Fast Food

I am starting to see a turn-around in another fast food player that I have avoided, stayed away from, because, well, it’s been expensive on earnings. It didn’t have much momentum and frankly it wasn’t that well run. Now, all of these things are improving, this company is finally starting to live up to a variant of its old slogan. It’s getting better here. With the stock trading at $5 and change I think Wendy’s/Arby’s Group is finally worth owning because the turn is real… The bottom line, the turn in Wendy’s is real even if I am in the minority judging by the lethargic stock price. I think the $5 fast food stock could go much higher thanks to the move in breakfast, international growth opportunities, plans for dual branding with Wendy’s/Arby’s and it’s getting better. The next big fast food stock.”– CNBC’s Mad Money[More...]

The Most Irrational Market

Opening up my MSN homepage today, I immediately zoned in on the business headlines off on the right hand side, and especially the one that loudly proclaimed: “U.S. economy shrank 6.1 pct in Q1.” That’s not exactly the best news to start off a trading day with, especially since - while everybody knew the economy would retract - they only thought it would do so by 5%. So I don’t think it irrational that I expected the major indexes to have already fallen by the time I got around to checking them out around an hour ago. Yet for some largely unknown reason, as I looked at the numbers they showed just the opposite. A healthy-looking Dow had gained 128 points, the Nasdaq was up 30 points and the S&P up 14 points. An hour later - and contrary to every rational line of thinking I can ponder - it’s 156, 36 and 16 respectively. Could somebody tell me what’s going on? It isn’t like the other prominent[More...]
