While many areas of the economy have been showing relative improvement over the past few months, there have been few bright spots in retail. However, August results provide some hope that things are finally starting to turn around.[More...]

Taking A Look At The Bearish Case

On Friday evening, I posted a number of charts for potential long trades. Index chart are currently trading in a 10 day range, and dip buyers have been active. On the other hand, we saw some distribution Friday morning, and some other factors indicate a top may be forming. Corey Rosenbloom points out that the S&P is forming a "rounded arc" pattern, along with a negative breadth divergence. Now, the oscillator is making new momentum lows, and the peaks in the oscillator are forming lower highs as price formed higher highs - that’s the sign of a classic non-confirmation which can be a bearish signal. The fact that price is forming a clean ‘arc’ pattern also has bearish implications, given that arcs represent[More...]

Retailers: Better Forecasts; Tough Conditions

Two pieces of data point to a better outlook for retailers: consumer confidence and earnings estimates. The Conference Board's May consumer confidence index spiked to 54.9 in May, it's highest level since last September. Behind the increase was a 21.3-point jump in the Expectations Index, from 51.0 to 72.3. This suggests that consumers believe economic conditions will likely improve in the future. Full-year earnings estimates for the retail sector continue to revised higher. During the past 4 weeks, 3 profit forecasts have been revised higher for every projection that has been cut - the strongest ratio of any sector. Within the sector, the largest number of positive revisions have occurred in Retail-Apparel/Shoe, Retail-Regional Department Store and <a[More...]

Teen Retail: Sell In May, And Go Far, Far Away

We all know consumption is the most prominent victim of this recession. Not only do we have to deal with soaring unemployment and tightening credit, but also the behavioral shift in America of spending less as a percentage of income. Obviously these factors are going to disproportionately hurt the sub sectors with the highest priced goods, or those considered the most discretionary such as luxury cars, high-end women’s clothing, etc. One sub-sector that will surely feel tremendous pain, however, is teen retail. It is common knowledge the national unemployment rate is expected to reach 10% or higher in the foreseeable future. This is well known, and priced in to most retail stocks. When you break unemployment down by age, however, a very grim signal for teenage spending in particular emerges. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current[More...]

Anyone who reads this blog knows my affinity for retail stocks, particularly apparel retailers. Simple businesses with measurable demand yet so complex and diverse in execution and strategy. More importantly, retail stocks can be quite volatile as investors fall in and out of love with the stocks almost as quickly as consumers fall in and out of love with various fashion trends. Just a few months ago, I wrote about how investors have unfairly punished retail stocks over the last year. In the last few weeks, we’ve seen just how quickly they’re willing to pile right back in. In fact, on a technical basis, many are showing signs of strong[More...]

Invest With Main Street

With all the recent hub-bub about “Wall Street vs. Main Street,” maybe its time investors start taking stock of what Main Street wants. After all, it’s consumer demand which ultimately drives those sales numbers that seem to have been in free fall. Warren Buffett once described his philosophy of looking for businesses with “wide moats” that protect their operations. Buffett was speaking of looking for enduring competitive advantages. Normally, we think of competitive advantages as traditional economic advantages - high switching costs or cost leadership. But, in a market where consumers are pulling back and thinking long and hard about where to spend their hard earned dollars. The firms most likely to retain and capture market share are the ones which deliver more than economic value to their customers. Companies must deliver compelling value. Value is more than just low prices or high quality. It’s perception and experience. This is why companies like[More...]

One Scary Unemployment Chart

Thanks to reader Linda for sending this chart; as they say a picture is a worth 1000 words. What we show below is the number of job losses VERSUS the peak employment level.... i.e. how many are lost versus the highwater mark in employment. As I was stating throughout 2008 as the "bottom pickers" were telling us to buy stocks, "they" were using the wrong playbook. Most market participants under the age of 50 have been living in a world of corporate led recessions... not a consumer led recession. This is why (even if you exclude the financial destruction) this was going to be something akin to the early 80s or late 70s - the last consumer led recession. And I'd argue in the few decades since our economy has transformed even more to a "service based" economy which is dependent on people shopping - so it's an even more perverse loop to the downside than if we had similar conditions in the late 70s or early 80s. Now, anyone who[More...]

NEW YORK - The nation's stores saw their first sales gain in 14 months in September, a sign of life from shoppers that fuels some hope for the holiday shopping season.

And stores' figures are looking better as they are compared last September when spending plummeted amid the ballooning financial meltdown.

As stores announced their results Thursday, J.C. Penney Co., Macy's Inc., and Target Corp. all reported smaller-than-expected declines in sales at stores open at least a year.

NEW YORK - Shoppers limited their back-to-school purchases and stayed focused on necessities in August, resulting in the 12th straight month of declining sales for retailers, but there were signs the holiday season could be less dismal than feared.

Some lower-priced chains, such as TJMaxx and Old Navy, even saw sales rise compared with a year earlier, though upscale stores' sales slipped.

The better-than-expected sales results eased some analysts' concern that the holiday season will be as bad as last year.
