Banking On Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS)

Barnes & Noble (BKS) shares are down about 15% since reporting earnings earlier this month. The drop was due to a negative earnings outlook for fiscal 2010. Many times the market may overreact in cases like this or may not take into account other more positive factors regarding future prospects which would otherwise translate to a higher price paid for the common equity of the firm. This presents opportunity for the diligent value investor.[More...]

Forget waiting in lines or paying $15.00 for a single novel when you can download them to your computer from the Internet or to special portable devices designed especially for that purpose. And now you can download them onto your iPhone. This latest advancement might be innovative, but let me tell you a few reasons why you shouldn’t give up on bookstores such as Barnes&Noble (NYSE: BKS) and Borders (NYSE: BGP) just yet… at least not because of the iPhone threat: Practical Reasons Why The Hard Copy Isn’t Going Anywhere Reason #1) The print is too small.
Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.<br[More...]
