It really has been a struggle to find new opportunities that have real growth potential to them; it seems much of the lauded U.S. "industry creation" must be happening in the private side as finding solid public companies, that can sustain growth at 25%+ has been difficult for a long while. I've been interested in the tech space here for a few weeks, but most of the names blasting off are names coming out of cyclical troughs - as I've said most of the technology space is an over hyped "industrial" theme, but covered in silicon to make it sexy. PPI Shows Nascent Signs Of Deflation

The market is trading higher in the first hour, after Hewlett-Packard issued upside Q4 and 2009 earnings guidance. The strength for them is surprising, but welcome nonetheless. Home Depot also reported better-than-expected earnings. On the downside, Corning (GLW) expects its Q4 sales to be below guidance, citing the weak retail environment. In economic news, the October PPI fell -2.8% month/month, larger than the -1.9% consensus. There were some large decreases in the report, indicating some early signs of deflation. This is likely a global phenomenon, which makes further rate cuts by central banks increasingly likely. Earlier today, economists and others who believe the seemingly drug-induced pseudo-reality spewed out each month by various government agencies finally learned what visitors to Financial Armageddon and a select group of other individuals have known for many months: the economy is heading south, most likely in a big way. WSJ: Food Makers Scrimp on Ingredients in an Effort to Fatten Profits

In 2007 we wrote how food companies, in an effort to "trick" the masses, were keeping prices flat while reducing the size of their boxes. (no inflation that way, right?) Now from the Wall Street Journal, we see the next iteration of that - wholesale substitution or elimination of ingredients (once again no inflation). This is yet another reason to simply mock the "inflation" figures - a lot of trickery is being done behind the scenes to make a bad problem look a lot better than it is. Implications: inflation is real and under reported. You (consumer) are getting less while paying equal or more. Aug. 25--Hands up anyone who bought Lloyds Banking Group at an all-time low of 25p when investors were running scared in March.
The Black Horse bank, which is now "only" 43 percent owned by the UK taxpayer, has since contributed in a big way to the bank sector's spectacular 62 percent rally since its March low.
After last week's surprising U-turn decision to take Cheltenham & Gloucester off the market, buyers climbed aboard following a report that chief executive Eric Daniels is in talks with Clive Cowdery's Resolution (3p better at 93p) about the possible UKpound 4bn sale of its pensions business Clerical Medical.

NH Natural Gas, Electric Customers Likely to See Big Savings: National Grid Could Lower Rates By 48 Percent

Mar. 21--Natural gas and electric customers could see a substantial drop in their utility bills this summer if the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission approves a rate decrease that would take effect May 1.
The average price drop would be $29 a month for gas and $17 a month for electricity, according to National Grid spokesman David Graves.
Public Utilities Commission hearings are scheduled for April 9 and 15.

Mar. 19--Stock-market bears, who have been selling the life assurers aggressively short in recent weeks, claiming they would be the next casualties of the banking crisis, were feeling the pain today as their shares soared.
Those fears stemmed from Aviva's decision to carry on paying a dividend despite worries it could not afford to.
The City warmed to the news from the Pru, which included a boardroom reshuffle, and the shares leapt 66p to 317 3/4p, putting them among the best blue-chip performers.
