Each week, I like to publish the past week's hottest ETFs to share some new trends and niche ETFs out there and give investors some new investing/diversification ideas. Last week, emerging markets and commodities continued to show strength while the S&P500 ended with week with a respectable gain of 3.2%. I've made sure to include both some leveraged ETFs with their outsized gains (but take note of leveraged ETF risk of value destruction over time due to daily rebalancing) as well as non-leveraged traditional sector ETFs.[More...]

Yesterday’s five bank failures bring the number of banks to fail during this economic storm to 120. Should these bank failures come as a surprise? No, some were already slapped with a Cease and Desist order prior to the FDIC shutting them down. Biostar Raises $3.6 Million

Biostar Pharmaceuticals has completed a private placement that raised $3.6 million in new capital. Biostar will use the proceeds to complete its new raw materials processing facility. By taking its raw material production in house, Biostar will lower costs and ensure its product quality. Biostar plans to sell excess raw materials to other pharmaceutical companies in the Shaanxi province.[More...]

With chants of "Dow 10K… Dow 10K" once again rising from the streets at the corner of Broad and Wall yesterday, it is easy to believe that the bulls are back on track and that we'll soon be looking at new highs for the stock market. As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

Nov 04 09 Most of the major pairs spent the Asian session trading near their major moving averages. During the session, Japan released their monetary policy meeting minutes where the bank pushed for better corporate funding support. The Federal Reserve is expected to keep its benchmark Interest Rate unchanged near zero today, as traders get ready for a busy news cycle. Investors will focus on the interest rate outlook, but many analysts say the Fed is unlikely to change the wording of its pledge to keep rates low for an extended period. What recovery? Canada drops 43,200 jobs as unemployment rate hits 8.6 per cent

OTTAWA - Canada's economy shed more than 43,000 jobs last month in a clear indication that the struggling economy is still feeling the aftershock of the deep recession that erupted a year ago.
Rising unemployment in the early stages of a timid recovery from recession is not considered unusual, but the October data revealed unusual weakness given the hopeful signals of the previous two months.
Not only did 43,200 jobs vanish into thin air in October - the result would have been worse without the pick-up of 27,500 in self-employment during the month.
