Dividend Stocks In The News Over The Past Week

The past several months have been characterized by tremendous volatility and a lot of negative news regarding the state of the economy as a whole. Given the uncertainties in the global economy, investors are wondering whether they should cash out their portfolios and simply wait for the storm to end. I think that this would not be a good move, especially for the dividend investor who already has a diversified portfolio of income producing stocks. Such an investor will be more focused on the dividend raises that his or her stocks deliver. Investors focusing on every tick of the market might miss some rare investment opportunities when there is a disconnect between fundamentals and price. Don’t forget that even during a crisis people will continue to eat, shave, take showers, purchase beverages, smoke and eat out.[More...]

Lawmakers to Question Kessel Next Week: Legislators to Raise Issues Tied to Suit

Jul. 21--LOCKPORT -- New York Power Authority President Richard M. Kessel will appear at next week's Niagara County Legislature meeting to face questions about issues that led the county to sue the Power Authority earlier this year.

Legislature Chairman William L. Ross said Monday that he has received confirmation from Power Authority headquarters that Kessel will attend the July 28 Legislature meeting, which starts at 7 p. m. in the County Courthouse, Park Avenue and Hawley Street.

"They'll probably talk about the sweep," Ross said, referring to the Power Authority's decision to send $544 million of its surplus funds to the general state treasury to help try to balance the regular state budget.

Jul. 7--With interest growing in the potential of wind power, an event planned for next week will explore business opportunities in the industry.

Organizers say the event is aimed at introducing companies not presently in the market to ways they can become part of the wind industry supply chain.

Local attention to wind power has increased in recent years with the debut of the Steel Winds project in Lackawanna and the New York Power Authority's vision of creating a wind farm off the shores of Lake Erie or Ontario.

Loophole Allows Wind Turbine Work In Colebrook Without Local Debate: BATTLE OVER TEST TOWERS

May 25--COLEBROOK -- Renewable energy is now an American mantra, but homeowner Stephen King has learned that a legal limbo awaits anyone who wakes up to discover that a wind farm might be going up next door.

Because of a loophole that allows zoning boards to approve test towers for wind turbines without notifying neighbors, residents near terrain favorable for wind energy could face the prospect of a major wind energy project being built in their community with limited ability to challenge it.

What's more, the state, through its clean energy grants and its final permitting authority -- the Connecticut Siting Council -- inadvertently supports the bypassing of local zoning during a wind energy development.
