Although I certainly would not rank it alongside Macro Man's dreaded vacation indicator or the incipient increase in the USD if and when the Economist finally decides to slot its decline on the front page, I still have the nagging feeling that whenever yours truly sit down at either a dull and difficult econometrics lecture or, as today, camps at school for a lab session in connection with a paper due next month, some event is bound to wreck havoc on markets while your author is busy estimating regressions. I would assume that some US market participants feel the same today as they give thanks before hauling in the Turkey.[More...]

EU Commission Asks Those Banksters Who Caused Crisis For Solutions, Critics Say

The EU Observer has come up with a very good question: Why are those who caused the financial crisis are now consulted by the EU Commission in order to come up with a solution?
I may add the question: Why are the bonus-greedy destroyers of global prosperity are still on their jobs at all? I expect a complete change of elites within the next 3 years as has always been the case after every financial crisis in history.
The report, prepared by 160 organisations accuses the undemocratic top echelon of the EU that they were only interested in stabilizing the banking industry and not in an improvement for the whole society.[More...]

The Next Leg Of The Crisis

In its chart of the day, Bloomberg shows the recent performance of the iTraxx Financials CDS index. The index tracks the performance of 25 bank and insurers unsecured securities, and today, for the first time since the Lehman bankruptcy, the Financials index surpassed the iTraxx Euro Corporate index. According to Bloomberg the inversion is indicative of "systemic stress" in the financial system and increasing expectations by financial company bondholders that in the upcoming financial restructurings, unsecured notes will likely end up getting impaired. “We’re seeing the start of the next leg of the crisis and that’s going to be financial bondholders taking a haircut as lenders default,” said Mehernosh Engineer, a London-based strategist at BNP Paribas. “There’s been a perception that banks’ senior bondholders are untouchable but that’s going to change. The crossing of the financial and corporate indexes “is clearly not a healthy sign,” according[More...]

Quantitative Easing At The ECB - Not Yet In The Playbook

The following is a joint effort by me and Edward Hugh and if we are both individually prone to writing long and (sometimes excessively) winding entries a combination is bound to be long and ugly; well, the former at least. Surely, it seems, in Macro Man's words that the ECB may have had one of those Damascene moment as interest rates were cut by 50 basis points yesterday. It was not the actual 50 point cut which was largely expected, but rather the ensuing comments by Trichet. In particularl I took note of the fact that now it is not only falling energy prices (disinflation) being mentioned, but also downward pressure on prices from falling domestic activity. Obviously, the[More...]
