2009 Will Transform The Coal Industry

Like many other industries, 2009 was a shock to the coal industry. Demand is on track to fall around 100 million tons, or about 10%, from that of the previous year. Given the role of cheap coal in generating baseload electricity, a drop of this scale would have been unfathomable a few years ago. Several factors converged to make this possible--including a poor economy, very low natural gas prices, and lower export demand.[More...]

The markets closed strongly today - well, not the inverse ETFs, chuckle. Today should be confirmation for even the most timid soul (me) that the market is in a new up leg after bouncing off support last week. Actually, today would have been a lovely time to enter covered call and naked put positions. For that matter, Friday would have been, also.[More...]

How will policy-makers promote a robust, employment-led recovery that will lay the foundation for strong, long-term growth? Meeting this challenge requires both the will to continue investing in families hard hit by the recession despite growing budget deficits and the skill in crafting the right mix of policies to ensure that this recovery - unlike the last one - will bring significant numbers of new jobs and rising[More...]

NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Duquesne Capital Management, L.L.C. (Duquesne), the largest shareholder of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. (FCL).

Having now carefully reviewed ANR's new proxy materials, in conjunction with further overwhelming evidence disclosed in recent days in other coal companies' earnings releases and earnings calls, Duquesne has concluded that its earlier decision to vote against the merger was correct, and believes that the information provided by ANR simply fails to come to grips candidly and completely with the salient facts, as explained below.

A related issue is whether the comparables that ANR uses in its presentation are appropriate; in Duquesne's view the comparables should primarily consist of met coal companies -- whose stocks are performing well -- and not the thermal coal companies used by ANR -- whose stocks are performing relatively poorly (1) -- given that the contribution of met coal to ANR's EBITDA is greater than 70%, based on Duquesne's analysis.
