Stocks Up Ahead Of Earnings Deluge

For those of us of a certain vintage, today is the 22nd anniversary of Black Monday, when our first fling with computerised trading ended in tears! But that was then and the market has no memory, so fast forward to a week when approximately 25% of the S&P 500 rare slated to report. So far this season, top-line numbers have been encouraging risk appetite: Of the companies which have reported, two thirds are beating on revenues. Last quarter, only 40% of the S&P outperformed on revenues.[More...]

The credit crisis hit the private equity business extremely hard, as the seizure of credit markets made deal making a near impossibility. Not to mention the fact that companies already owned were often worth far less than the acquisition price. It is not too much of stretch to say that private equity is leveraged to the general health of the economy; making good times better, but bad times even worse. That is why it is great news to hear that Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of the largest private equity firm in the world, saying that he is seeing, “more than green shoots of recovery.” Schwarzman spoke reassuringly about his industries prospects to at a conference in Dubai, according to Reuters news wire.[More...]

I have a very negative piece on private equity scheduled to hit at the end of the day, so let me preface that piece by saying I have very little exposure to our financial oligarchy simply because much of it revolts me. I can make money in other ways - and sleep at night. The obvious Russian mafia play is Goldman Sachs (GS) but I don't want to go there - instead I chose the king of private equity, BX, - lesser of 2 evils I suppose. That said, both the investment banking and private equity culture is helping to enact reverse Robin Hood upon the American masses (take from the many to give to the few). I am only posting that footnote in this piece because of what I have coming out in a few hours ;) It's a rip roarer.[More...]
