WellPoint, Inc. (WLP) reported third quarter earnings of $1.78 per share, which was above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.39, and the year-ago earnings of $1.58.
Boston Properties (BXP) reported strong third quarter results with FFO (funds from operations) of $158.5 million or $1.13 per share compared to $132.5 million or $1.09 per share in the year-earlier quarter.
Yesterday, oil drilling equipment maker FMC Technologies Inc. (FTI) reported better-than-expected third quarter results, helped by robust performance from its subsea oil and gas processing systems.[More...]

Early Week Earnings Watch

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.<br[More...]

I haven't had to much to post during the past few days. With the market range-bound and seemingly tired, yet unwilling to selloff, few charts seem truly inspiring either long or short. In my account, I continue to hold many of the same short positions I've had for several weeks, focused on insurers, some financial stocks, retailers, etc. I've had mixed results on the shorts, but will continue to hold since I think we'll trade lower than the current level at some point reasonably soon. Looking the other direction, I am holding high cash levels, with long positions primarily in commodity areas and semiconductor stocks. Here's a look at some current holdings in the trading account: Long: ZEUS, NFG, EGO, NVLS, KLAC, NGD, OCNF, DRYS, CRTX, XING Short: OFG, FDML, PRSC, DTG, AFL, BXP, AET, CTAS, AZO The retirement account has a larger number of holdings, including some that I am giving a longer leash (for[More...]

It appears a lot of traders are switching to the short side quickly, so we may get a short squeeze soon. However, I will be adding short into strength. I added some short exposure in the REIT sector today, and will be looking for opportunities to short the financial sector as well, although I am still a bit nervous in the latter case. Here are a few to consider: - PSB: REIT, business parks. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_08bdwZ8f6Hw/Se3XoipoYQI/AAAAAAAADDc/DjpDvb6ZlSw/s400/2009-04-21-psb1yr.png" border="0"[More...]

Lately more and more investors have been asking the same question: why are traditional metrics of market stress and credit supply not indicative of what the market is doing? In particular, they look at the VIX index as well as 3 month LIBOR, which, last time around exploded when the market reached its post-Lehman lows in November. Why should it be different now, when the market reached a 12 year low last week and financial company CDS levels hit all time wides, yet both the VIX and LIBOR have barely budged? It is gradually becoming evident[More...]

5 Dividend Paying Stocks To Consider

Any well diversified portfolio will also include to some extent a few dividend paying stocks. Whether in a bull market or a bear market dividend paying stocks boost your portfolio performance and when you reinvest those dividends (DRIP) you are able to take advantage of stocks that have gotten cheaper or just build on a position you already own. So, how do you find dividend paying stocks? Easy. Just us a stock screener and filter the results to show only dividend and yield stocks. I’ve set up a stock screener on E*Trade looking at stocks that yield between 4-6% and payable between .50 cents and 1.00 a share. Stocks that pay higher dividends are usually a lot more expensive so I wanted to focus on stocks that are affordable to the everyman. I haven’t done any due diligence into who these companies are or what they do, that’s for you to figure out yourself but again, this is about adding one or two stocks to[More...]

Commercial Real Estate Finally Hitting Home In Financial Media

Starting to see stories of commercial real estate weakness everywhere now... imagine that. Made Fast Money even... shocker. To be fair, Karen Finerman has been on this case for a while, unlike most. The normal crew is too busy wasting time shouting at each other - the show has gotten old when all it is nowadays is seeing who can yell louder, Macke or Najarian. Yawn. Back to commercial real estate, it appears people are finally seeing the light we've been preaching for a very long time.
Another day, another REIT implosion - these are simply gold mines for shorts. Commerical real estate is in serious trouble since as we keep saying we are just NOW entering the heart of the recession and many of these companies are already struggling - the lack of access to credit markets is devastating for these guys - many of which have a lot of debt to turnover. Today's REIT of the day is Prologis (PLD) whose CEO resigned, dividend is cut, cutting jobs, you name it - the need for cash is desperate. <a[More...]

Despite the recent commodity-price induced weakness that has helped improve valuation, we are keeping our Hold recommendation unchanged for Hess Corp. (HES) shares at this stage. The near-term outlook for the stock in particular and the overall group in general remains unfavorable. We will revisit our outlook for the stock once early signs of stability emerge in the crude oil market, which we believe will be sooner than later. We continue to see upstream momentum at Hess on the back of the company's leverage to high crude oil prices and a large inventory of projects in Brazil, Australia Libya and Ghana. On September 4, Hess Corporation announced that the Nimblefoot-1 exploration well on Australia's Northwest Shelf discovered natural gas. The well encountered 93 feet of net gas pay.
