Wall Street Journal: Even Apple (AAPL) is Not Immune

First, let me say I'm a big Apple (AAPL) fan from the perspective of their long term prospects. But this infatuation with all things technology by market bulls is silly - aside from large cash hordes there is nothing to see here in my opinion other than "thesis trading". Hewlett Packard (HPQ) was not impressive, Cisco (CSCO) was not impressive, Dell (DELL) looks dead - etc. The Wall Street Journal reports that even Apple (AAPL) is getting hit by this consumer, with January sales down 6% year over year. Apple relies on the old[More...]

Emerging Markets - Spotting the Good News ...

... is getting increasingly difficult at the moment. Take Hungary for example. I take it that most economic commentators and analyst know that it is bad in Hungary and together with Ukraine I would submit that these two face the largest risk of sporting the next global macro blowout (assuming that Russia does not suddenly collapse prematurely). Hungary's biggest problem at the moment is how on earth to stay worried about a dropping Forint while at the same time realizing that the country is headed towards the worst recession in several decades. As some readers will remember the reason that the Forint today is subjected to full force of currency punters is to be found one year ago. Back in February, <a[More...]

Cache Keeps Solid Balance Sheet

Cache Inc. (CACH) reported third quarter results that were in-line with the company's lowered guidance from Sept 22. The company also said that its full-year 2008 guidance should come in at the low end of its previous expectations of sales of $278-$280 million and EPS of $0.28-$0.33. We are leaving our fourth quarter estimates unchanged, but slightly lowering our 2009 estimates. Macro headwinds continue to pressure consumer spending, and in turn, Cache's sales trends remain weak. Still, the company's balance sheet is solid, its inventories are lean and it continues to cut costs, all of which position the company for the eventual rebound for retailers. We maintain our Hold rating. Read the full analyst report on[More...]

The Pain On Main

As someone who has spent more years than he cares to remember trying to figure out the mysteries of the markets, I freely acknowledge that I don't only focus on hard data like statistics and trendlines. I also think about the human element. That is because, like most of those who have actually bought and sold securities using real money understand (and unlike many of the TV pundits or academic "experts" who think they know how markets work), there's more to trading and investing than the numbers alone. The same goes for economic data. Statistics like GDP and industrial production aren't just cannon fodder for Wall Street paper-pushing and house-of-card building. Indeed, in one of yesterday's posts, "Behind the (Bad) Numbers," I think I[More...]

Now People Are Worried About Retail Stocks?

Gotta tell you (and long time readers can attest) we were very frustrated throughout the 1st half of the year as we were screamed at by pundits about the "2nd half 2008 recovery" - I think at least 5x a week for months on end I used that line along with the term "Kool Aid thinking"during late winter and spring. After that thesis proved to fail, the Kool Aid pundits turned to "as gas drops 50 cents the consumer will be back" - hedge funds ran into retail stocks to run them up on "that thesis" - I said that one will be proven to be wrong but we looked foolish those weeks/months as we held none of the stocks that people were running into on false pretenses. Remember, in the stock market - perception is reality. It does not matter if reality is wrong as long as enough people believe it. As I think how the stock market can turn so suddenly, one must step out of one's own shoes and realize so many people were drinking the[More...]

Impressively, the underlying operating margin is rising despite rising input costs in the first half of 2008. In addition, the developing and emerging markets are expected to continue driving incremental topline growth. Unilever has simplified the management hierarchy whereby the dual chairman structure has been replaced by a structure comprising a single chief executive officer and a non-executive Chairman. The organizational changes will expedite decision-making, improve execution, and enhance customer focus.
Can Android Find A Place In The Crowded Smart Phones Market?
