Spreads were mixed to slightly tighter in the major indices today despite negative breadth in single-names. HY outperformed IG as both indices saw inside days amid low volumes pre-holiday tomorrow. Financials outperformed non-financials but the financials were off their best levels by the close (as we suspect some concerns over Bair's Basel II Bumblings started to be taken seriously).[More...]

I will try to be intellectually honest with my assessments and recognize my errors. Also i want to look back and see if there are any mental traps that affected my decisions and recognize when i fall for these psychological biases.
Below is all the positions that I have talked about on this blog for over a year or so. All are businesses that I looked to own but did not or I bought and sold.

Dividend Stocks Are Getting Expensive

Over the last several weeks, the number of dividend stocks my model identified as a buy has greatly declined. On July 3rd it flagged 14 stocks as potential buys verses only 7 stocks on August 29th. The August 29th list had the advantage of using a quarter point lower minimum dividend. Needless to say the recent market rally has made many dividend stocks expensive.[More...]

Tickers For The Latest Portfolio Reshaping

Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad.

Most people and investment managers trade too often. They sell their winners too rapidly, and panic too soon on their losers. Now, I’m not advocating “buy and forget,” or Buffett’s statement, “Our favorite holding period is forever.”[More...]

Spin-Off Idea: Cardinal Health

By end of business today Cardinal health, CAH, will spin-off its medical care division, Carefusion, CFN, and it will focus on drug distribution. The spin off is very interesting midst all the talk of health-care reform because whenever there is uncertainty it pays to go long.

The market is very hot for the CFN spin off. Although CFN accounts for only a small portion of CAH's revenue, maybe less than 7%, it makes third of its profit. The business is very high margin and its potential for growth is solid. The independent company will be able to focus on new products and free to allocate capital to R&D. But it is fully valued when the when issued shares trade at $19. I figure its value is around $20-$23.[More...]
