Dow Down Triple Digits

After a sharp fall in the first hours, when Dow plunged 275, the Dow had a major rally bringing it near break even. But sellers took over in the PM, Dow ended with a loss of 105, decliners 3-1 over advancers & NAZ fell 41. The 8K floor for the Dow has been quite strong under a lot of pressure in recent weeks. The chart below shows that the Dow held above 11K during the spring-summer period, before the Sep crash. Since then the 8K floor held, with one exception which didn't last long. Bulls point to this a base building. However, if it gives way there probably will not be support for some time as seen when the floor was lowered from 11K to 8K. As I write to you this week, I am back at my parent's house in Indiana. I have written before about New Castle and the struggles the town went through back in the '70s and '80s. Kind of ironic that I am here when President Bush announces that the automakers are getting a $17 billion bailout. I think about this action and how New Castle doesn't have any auto plants anymore, but there are so many retired Chrysler workers here that it will certainly affect the local economy. Many of the residents rely on the pension program of Chrysler to maintain their lifestyles and had Chrysler gone under, New Castle would have taken several steps back. The town has grown in the past 10 years and as we drove in from Indianapolis last night, I couldn't help but notice the new stores and restaurants. I have not done well in the markets for the last six weeks. Here is why: Overweight in Life Insurers. Yes, they are in better shape than the banks, but that only means they got hit later, not that they would not get hit. Too much economic sensitivity. AtheroGenics (AGIX) just reported that top-line ANDES data showed a dose dependent response and statistically significant reduction in A1c at the six month period. However, we would categorize the reduction as only modest at 0.6% for the highest (150mg) dose, and continued signs of elevate liver activity give us cause to remain skeptical of the eventual commercial potential of AGI-1067. Until a large development partner validates the program we choose to remain skeptical of AGI-1067. We are still not comfortable with the side effect profile on it, and with recent topline efficacy data showing only modest reduction in A1c levels, we are struggling to find exactly what differentiating characteristics AGI-1067 will contain in the approved label relative to other oral anti-diabetic medications. Local Firm to Renovate Municipal Auditorium

Apr. 18--HARLINGEN -- City officials have awarded a contract to begin interior renovation work at the Municipal Auditorium, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Dolly in July.
CAS, a local company, received a $513,500 contract to replace lighting, theatrical fixtures, seating and interior finishes, said Joel Humphries, city director of arts and entertainment.
Funding to repair the auditorium is a mixture of Federal Emergency Management Agency money, insurance proceeds and from the Texas Office of Rural Community Affairs, Humphries said Friday.
