WSJ: Latest Picks and Pans from George Soros and John Paulson

Two names we like to keep our eyes on are George Soros and John Paulson (both of hedge fund world). Ironically the last piece I did on either, was a combined piece as well. The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. The S&P 500 comprises of 500 large cap common stocks actively traded in the United States. The largees public companies that are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are included in the S&P 500 index. The S&P 500 index was lunched in 1957 and is a value weighted index which is based on the 500 American stocks with the largest market capitalizations. The S&P 500 is the most widely followed index After the Dow Jones Industrial Average index and it is considered a barometer for the American economy. Another Strong Session

Wall Street had another strong session today, although they gave back a chunk of it in the last hour, but still closed with strong gains across the board with excellent technicals. The day started out with a big gap up. They ran hard and steadily in the morning, reached the session highs right around noon, and then pulled back, retested, bounced and failed to take out the highs and made lower highs, and rolled over in the last hour . Still, net on the day the Dow was up 216 ? at 7978, with a high of nearly 100 points greater than that. The S&P 500 at 834.38 was up 23.30, 11 points off its high. Arbitron (NYSE:ARB): Upgraded To Overweight At JP Morgan - Actionable

JP Morgan is out with a significant call on Arbitron (NYSE:ARB) upgrading their rating to Overweight from Neutral with a $21 tgt. JPM believes the main overhang to the stock may be removed in coming weeks if its largest client, Clear Channel, renews its contract with the company for its smaller diary markets. Clear Channel’s contract expired in December for the non-PPM markets (they estimate this business represents approx. 5-6% of ARB revenues) and is expected to make a decision on renewal before the April ratings book is released. Wednesday’s Market Recap (03/25/09)

A turbulent day for the markets ended with a slight gain. The markets started out strong due to the release of strong economic data on housing and durable goods. The Dow and NASDAQ closed at 7749.81 and 1528.95 respectively. The S&P was up 0.96% to close at 813.88. Oil was down as news was released that US inventories were at a 16-year high. Oil settled at $52.77. Gold was up today settling at $938 as the dollar weakened. The 10-year price was down and yields settled at 2.786% The Commerce Department recently released data showing that demand for durable goods increased 3.4% in February. If transportation goods were not included orders were up 3.9%. Orders for capital goods increased 11% in February as well as machinery orders increasing 13.5%. Strong Showing For The Bulls

We had very interesting and extremely volatile session. The indices started with a pop to the upside, and surged to new 2 ? week rally highs just slightly over Monday morning?s late high, reaching as high as 1261.41 on the NDX. The SPX also reached new rally highs, getting up to just under 827. Then they pulled back to retest and consolidate, but when a rally didn?t materialize they rolled over late-morning and hard, slicing through yesterday?s double bottom on the NDX and eventually taking out the lows on the SPX as well. Then in early to mid-afternoon they spiked down hard, culminating in a drop from 1261 NDX to 1207, and from 827 to 792 on the SPX. CB Richard Ellis (NYSE:CBG): Upgraded At JP Morgan And JMP Securities

CB Richard Ellis (NYSE:CBG) gets some love from JP Morgan and JMP Securities after announcing a credit amendment: - JP Morgan upgrades to stock to Overweight from Neutral with a price tgt of $7 tgt saying the credit amendment was a big part of what they wanted to see to get more bullish. Two items have given them pause on this name in the past: 1) the risk of a debt covenant being busted created earnings and liquidity uncertainty, and 2) they thought a single digit earnings multiple on trough earnings would be a good entry point. The company's announced changes to its credit agreement go directly to the first point. As to the second point, CBG now trades at 6.8x JPM's again-lowered EPS estimate. Block 37 developer Joseph Freed and Associates loses control of retail project: Bank of America wins ruling appointing CB Richard Ellis as receiver; Freed vows to appeal

Nov. 21--In a major setback to its urban ambitions, Joseph Freed and Associates LLC lost control of the long-troubled Block 37 project just as the first stores prepared to open.
Cook County Circuit Judge Margaret Brennan ruled Friday that Freed didn't have the means to see the cash-strapped project through to completion and instead placed it in the hands of a receiver, CB Richard Ellis, a real estate broker and property manager.
Freed vowed to appeal.
