Earnings Review Of Note Monday-Tuesday

Some names I am looking at early this week Monday Fund holdings - Baidu.com (BIDU) and First National Financial (FNF). The former broke through the 200 day moving average Thursday but I cut it down to 1 share on super froth. The latter has been stagnat the past 8 days, with each day an intraday low hitting the 50 day moving average. Very strange. I cut back a bit to a 2.5% stake since I have double jeopardy in these guys with FNF and FAF. One thing about being ahead of the curve is you do not realize that patience is rewarded as the herd catches up. Again, I am completely boggled that this infrastructure "story" was "news" to everyone but apparently we can see why newspapers are dying a slow death - no one reads... scratching my head still since it was so obvious. Back of Envelope Look at Infrastructure

Back in the old days, we used to look at individual companies, sectors... analyze industry data points, do comparative valuation analysis, read earnings reports with great interest, etc etc. Those were good times. Now, we wait every day for 3 PM, play a bunch of ETFs for a 1 hour trade, and then try to predict what ETFs would be best suited for the next 2-48 hours based on charts. That's "investing" today. Just for old times sake I thought I'd look at a group that I (still) like for the long run - it seems almost every world government is going to fix their issues with infrastructure projects. The problem is the consensus that project after project will get cancelled due to low oil prices and lack of credit. It really does not matter what side of the chalk line you are on - when these stocks rally people will cling to one side of the arguement and when the stocks sell off, they will cling to the other. And here is the list of worst perfomers... keep in mind this is over a 90 day period. I show 136 stocks that lost at least 45% in the previous quarter. Very bad. In the second quarter, Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (AAP) reported diluted earnings per share were $0.79, compared to $0.64 in the prior-year period. Net sales increased to $1.24 billion from $1.17 billion in the same period last year. The revenue increase reflected a net addition of 138 new stores in the past 12 months. Comparable store sales saw an increase of 2.9% compared to 1.2% increase in the same quarter of the previous year. Though it is generating topline growth by opening new stores, the company currently faces a challenging industry environment. To combat the difficult industry metrics, AAP has reviewed its business strategies to drive sales, lower costs and increase return on invested capital (ROIC).
