ABC, CBS both have early corporate ties to NBC

The three original broadcast networks still around today can all be traced back to the National Broadcasting Co.
NBC began as a radio network in 1926, formed by General Electric Co., Westinghouse Electric Co. and Radio Corporation of America after buying broadcast assets from AT&T.
RCA became sole owner in 1932, until GE bought it back in 1986.

CBS show sales help offset drop in 3Q ad revenue

LOS ANGELES - The sale of popular TV shows partly offset a drop in third-quarter advertising revenue at CBS Corp. but the company said ad trends are improving in the final three months of the year.
"As the economy recovers, CBS will be a leading beneficiary in the upturn."
CBS, which is based in New York, posted net income of $208 million, reversing a $12.5 billion loss a year ago in a quarter that was marred by impairment charges.

LOS ANGELES - CBS Corp. posted third-quarter earnings that beat analyst forecasts Thursday as sales of popular shows to other networks and higher subscription fees for pay-TV service Showtime helped overcome an advertising downturn.
The New York-based broadcast network operator, which is controlled by media mogul Sumner Redstone, posted net income of $208 million, reversing a $12.5 billion loss in a year-ago quarter that was marred by impairment charges.
Adjusted for one-time items, the earnings came to 25 cents per share, past analyst expectations for 22 cents per share.

Dramatized ads weave plot lines around product

LOS ANGELES - In television's latest quest to discourage viewers from skipping ads, actors from NBC and ABC shows are appearing in character in commercials to interact with products in parallel story lines.
This new kind of commercial further blurs the line between program and advertisement and comes as traditional product placements within shows, an early response to fast-forwarding, have become common.
A voice-over refers to Sprint's wireless data network, as the phone is offered exclusively through Sprint Nextel Corp. in the U.S.: "This is suspicion, on The Now Network."

AP sources: DirecTV, TBS, TNT to put shows online

DirecTV Group Inc. is in talks with the TBS and TNT cable networks to offer their shows online, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
DirecTV, the nation's largest satellite TV operator, previously said it was considering such deals but did not specify the networks.
DirecTV joins a growing list of cable, satellite and phone companies that are offering consumers a "multiscreen" experience: the ability to watch shows on TV, computers and mobile devices like cell phones.

CBS to run video ad in EW print magazine

NEW YORK - An upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly's print edition will be embedded with a video player that will run ads for CBS shows and Pepsi.
CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc.'s Entertainment Weekly billed the video advertisement as the first ever to appear in a print magazine.
CBS says the video player insert, made by a Los Angeles company called Americhip Inc., will be able to withstand the binding processes and mail delivery.

In response to amplified concern in the market for risk related to corporate insolvency, Audit Integrity, an independent financial research and risk modeling firm, today released the results of its bankruptcy model research and has identified 20 corporations, with $1 billion or more in market capitalization, that have the highest probability of declaring bankruptcy in the next twelve months.
With the increased incidence of company failures, corporate stakeholders such as insurance companies, auditing professionals, procurement executives and regulators, find corporate survival to be a critical risk issue.

The Davlin Philanthropic Fund, the first no-load mutual fund to allow investors to make charitable contributions from their management fees, ended its first year of operations on June 10th by making substantial progress toward the goal of educating charities and investors about "sustainable giving."
Most important, the Davlin Philanthropic Fund sent out its first donation checks to nine separate charities.
