If you are an avid short seller, the financial sector is of particular interest. I did some research on short interest levels for various financial-related industries and, as a whole, the sector's short interest level was down 3% (as of Jan 15th). The industries researched are the 1) broker-dealers, large banks, 2) securities processors, 3) regional banks, 4) online brokers, 5) specialty/mortgage finance, 6) life insurance, 7) asset management, 8) p&c insurance, and 9) reinsurance. The largest increase in short interest came from the securities processors, up +42% (partially thanks to STT: +86%). The runners up were the broker-dealers and large banks, up 8%. Commerce Bancshares Misses

This morning, Commerce Bancshares (CBSH) reported 4Q08 earnings of $0.58 per share, four cents short of consensus estimates. The miss was primarily due to sharp increase in credit costs and lower non-interest income, partially offset by better-than-expected growth in net interest income, due to lower funding costs. Net interest income in 4Q08 amounted to $156.3 million, up 3.1%, from the previous quarter and 13.7%, from the prior-year quarter. The increase over the previous quarter was mainly due to lower rates paid on deposits and other borrowings, as well as higher average investment securities balances and higher rates earned on these securities. Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.[More...]

Verisign, Inc. (VRSN) reported $303 million in revenues during Q2, up 17.1% y/y but down 14.4% q/q. Revenues from core business (Domain Names, SSL Certificates, and Identity and Authentication Services (IAS), came in at $233 million. GAAP EPS came in at ($0.35) for the quarter. Pro-forma EPS of $0.25 exceeded our estimate by $0.03. Core business generated a non-GAAP operating margin of 34.2%, up from 30.3% registered in Q1 2008. Growth in the naming business slowed down. The management provided Q3 revenue guidance of $236-241 million. They remain confident of exiting 2008 with an operating margin of 35%. VeriSign is trading at 31.7 times our reduced 2008 earnings estimate of $0.98 per share. And the big banks -- the focus of the public's ire during the congressional debate -- may not cost the Treasury much, if any, money when the program is finally wound down.
Wells Fargo appears poised to do the same.
Citigroup isn't yet in a position to repay the TARP money, and the Treasury couldn't sell its shares quickly without depressing the price.
