Cubist Pharma (NASDAQ:CBST): Downgraded To Underperform AOppenheimer

Oppenheimer is downgrading Cubist Pharma (NASDAQ:CBST) to Underperform from Peer Perform. Firm notes they are downgrading CBST based on risk of unfavorable in-licensing/acquisition, current valuation, Cubicin litigation risk, and low probability of takeout. Importantly, 1) Firm remains cautious ahead of a significant in-licensing or acquisition; 2) They believe CBST is fairly valued at $17.00-$19.00 after adjusting for an in-licensing or acquisition; 3) They believe Cubicin patent litigation represents a significant revenue overhang; 4) They believe an acquisition is unlikely given the generic Cubicin challenge and ensuing patent litigation. More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. Best Performing Stock of 2008

I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. Cubist Pharma (NASDAQ:CBST) : Downgraded To Underperform At Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is out downgrading Cubist Pharma (NASDAQ:CBST) to Underperform from Mkt Perform, seeing downside to $18-$19 range. According to Oppenheimer the downgrade is based on concerns that the near-term product in-licensing is likely to be outside core markets and may result in material dilution. CBST has identified licensing a late-stage or commercial product as a high priority. Based on firm's review of acquisition candidates in CBST's core anti-infective market, they see few compelling opportunities and believe CBST may be forced to expand outside its core market. Cubist Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Teva Parenteral Medicines

Cubist Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company, has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Teva Parenteral Medicines, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
Cubist has filed the lawsuit in response to an abbreviated new drug application filed by Teva Parenteral Medicines seeking the FDA approval to market a generic version of daptomycin prior to the expiration of Cubist's patent rights.
Daptomycin is marketed in the US and internationally under the brand name Cubicin as therapy for serious skin and bloodstream infections caused by certain gram-positive bacteria.
