Bloomberg: Retail REITs Have Further to Fall Even After 78% Decline

Speak of the devil (Mar 13: Beginning to Build a REIT Short Portfolio) we have a nice story front and center on Bloomberg. Any article with Howard Davidowitz in it, makes me smile - even if it's only a passing mention. To reiterate I am on a go slow approach to building these short positions since the market looks to potentially have more upside to it, which will most likely take associated poor companies with it. I am hoping to this first batch of purchases actually goes bad, which would mean I can build much larger positions at higher prices - hence more profit when the eventual next down leg comes. I will say, however,[More...]

Dow Sinks Below 8000 Again

Uncertainties about the administration's plan to stabilize the bank sector dragged down stocks. Dow dropped 122 (taking it below 8K), decliners were only modestly ahead of advancers & NAZ pulled back from a nice gain in the AM to essentially even at the close. Banks continue weak, I can't remember how many times I've said that. S&P 500 FINANCIALS INDEX slipped in the PM, from up in the AM to close at down 1.20 bringing the index under 120. The MLP Index continues to sit on the 200 line, can't make up its mind to go up or down (similar to the Dow sitting on or just above the 8K line). Today MLPs closed at 199.39, down 1.86. REITs & junk bond funds hang in there (at very low levels) as they find a few buyers who grab the 17-20% yields. Speaking of yields, the Treasury 10 year bond yield has quietly (in all the other confusion going on) risen from just above 2% to 2.91%, mostly in 2009. Nothing like worries about[More...]

It's Not Just Consumers Who Are Making Adjustments

Analysts and the media have focused plenty of attention on how overindebted and tapped out consumers are responding to deteriorating economic conditions. So far, there are clear signs that Americans are becoming more disciplined -- cutting back, saving, reusing, repairing and, overall, adjusting to a world where uncertainty is on the rise and there is much less to go around. But the reaction is not one-sided. Those on the other side of the counter are also seeing the writing on the wall -- better late than never, I guess -- and are starting to make structural adjustments of their own. In "Retailers Prepare for a New, Frugal Future," the Associated Press gives us the details. <blockquote dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT:[More...]

Circuit City Is Closing But Don’t Give Up On The Rest Of Retail Just Yet

Say goodbye to Circuit City (NYSE: CC). And to another 34,000 jobs for the U.S. Economy. Because that’s exactly how many employees the chain still has to its name in its remaining 567 store nation wide. Following in the footsteps of another big name national chain, Linens n’ Things, Circuit City is the latest to announce that it will officially be going out of business. Beginning tomorrow, January 17, the company will begin its final round of sales which will continue until March 31, pending court approval. Its Canadian branch is faring better so far, and will continue operating all 765 of those stores for the time being. That has to be a relief for the 3,000 workers who work for those locations. So what does this mean for retail? Well, don’t ask president and CEO George Whalin of Retail Mangement Consultants. Because he appears to be mixing up his messages. On the one[More...]

Can Circuit City Survive?

Circuit City (NYSE: CC) might be on the fast-track to failure, but that doesn’t mean it’s taking the new course lying down. Even now, the nation-wide chain is in talks with two different parties interested in either buying out the stores or infusing more cash into the floundering company. It’s a nice thought, but both parties want to make sure such an investment would be sound first, which means Circuit City isn’t off the hook yet. Ricardo Salinas Pliego should already know something about the company he has a 28% stake in, but he’s still taking his time looking into the details according to his spokesman. The Mexican retail and media mogul may or may not be one of the alleged parties however, as Circuit City isn’t providing any details. The fact that they have two interested parties is a good sign, but that doesn’t mean Circuit City’s Salvation is by any means guaranteed. It’s dire straits[More...]

Buyers Or Financing May Be Available For Circuit City

Credit is tight. No One is Lending. Financing right now is impossible. These are all comments or sentiments that many have felt or heard during the past several months. Everyone seems to be waiting for the bottom to be established. News today about embattled retailer Circuit City may show that there is a possible ray of light on the horizon. It has been reported that Circuit City Stores Inc. is in talks with two interested parties that could buy the company or provide additional financing for it to stay in business. Circuit City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this past November amidst slumping sales and a slumping economy.[More...]

A Big Shakeout In Retail Is Coming In 2009

It comes as no surprise to anyone who has set foot in a mall this holiday season that retailers are struggling. The Sunday before Christmas, I went to Target in the early afternoon for some last minute gifts. When I went to checkout, the express line for shoppers with fewer than ten items was empty. I walked up, put down my items, and was out the door in less than two minutes. Great for me, not so great for Target. Judging by reports, this will be the worst holiday shopping season in almost 40 years. This means that after the next round of corporate earnings reports that start next week, a wave of bankruptcy filings could follow. On a recent Bloomberg radio interview, Burt Flickinger of Strategic Resource Group said "You'll see department stores, specialty stores, discount stores, grocery stores, drugstores, major chains either multi- regionally or nationally go out." So what does this mean to you? A few things: for one,[More...]

Electronics A Tough Sell Yet Best Buy Stands By Forecast

Oh to be a Electronics Retailer during a recession, roughly as sought-after a profession as 'Big 3 personal flight crew', after that first trip to Washington. But Best Buy (BBY) is holding on in the midst of turbulence while its main competitor has all but bowed out. With Circuit City Stores (CCTYQ) trading OTC and trying to stay afloat, BBY would seem to be serving for the match. If only customers would come to the stores and buy that is. With profits down 77% year over year in the latest quarter it appears on the surface Best Buy is facing some troubles of its own. But the company is being run effectively despite consumer spending reports that are on record as the worst since the early 30s. So to the numbers: Quarterly profits of $0.13/share ($0.35/share excluding special items) were better than expected. Analysts had the numbers pinned at $0.24/share[More...]

Swelling Ranks of Sellers

One feature that defines a deflationary downturn is the expanding array of sellers. You don't just have the usual crowd who are looking to make a profit or to get rid of something they already own so they can buy something else. You also see more and more individuals and firms who have to sell because they don't have enough cash on hand to meet their needs; lenders who end up with something they don't want because borrowers have defaulted on their obligations; people who are worried about their job prospects or other concerns who want to be more liquid; and others who simply get caught up in the spirit of the times. In "Rising Retailer Threat: Liquidations," the Wall Street Journal shines the light on one group whose ranks are destined to swell dramatically in the months and years[More...]

Circuit City Stores, Inc. today announced that the New York Stock Exchange has suspended the company's common stock effective immediately. The NYSE reached this decision in light of the company's announcement to file a voluntary petition for reorganization relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court. As previously announced, the company also was not in compliance with the NYSE's price criteria for common stock because the average closing price of the company's common stock was less than $1.00 per share over a consecutive 30-trading-day period as of October 22, 2008. The company noted that not being listed on the NYSE is not a default under the company's debtor-in-possession revolving credit facility.[More...]
