Bloomberg: Retail REITs Have Further to Fall Even After 78% Decline

Speak of the devil (Mar 13: Beginning to Build a REIT Short Portfolio) we have a nice story front and center on Bloomberg. Any article with Howard Davidowitz in it, makes me smile - even if it's only a passing mention. To reiterate I am on a go slow approach to building these short positions since the market looks to potentially have more upside to it, which will most likely take associated poor companies with it. I am hoping to this first batch of purchases actually goes bad, which would mean I can build much larger positions at higher prices - hence more profit when the eventual next down leg comes. Dow Sinks Below 8000 Again

Uncertainties about the administration's plan to stabilize the bank sector dragged down stocks. Dow dropped 122 (taking it below 8K), decliners were only modestly ahead of advancers & NAZ pulled back from a nice gain in the AM to essentially even at the close. Banks continue weak, I can't remember how many times I've said that. S&P 500 FINANCIALS INDEX slipped in the PM, from up in the AM to close at down 1.20 bringing the index under 120. The MLP Index continues to sit on the 200 line, can't make up its mind to go up or down (similar to the Dow sitting on or just above the 8K line). Today MLPs closed at 199.39, down 1.86. REITs & junk bond funds hang in there (at very low levels) as they find a few buyers who grab the 17-20% yields. Speaking of yields, the Treasury 10 year bond yield has quietly (in all the other confusion going on) risen from just above 2% to 2.91%, mostly in 2009. Nothing like worries about[More...]

It's Not Just Consumers Who Are Making Adjustments

Analysts and the media have focused plenty of attention on how overindebted and tapped out consumers are responding to deteriorating economic conditions. So far, there are clear signs that Americans are becoming more disciplined -- cutting back, saving, reusing, repairing and, overall, adjusting to a world where uncertainty is on the rise and there is much less to go around. But the reaction is not one-sided. Those on the other side of the counter are also seeing the writing on the wall -- better late than never, I guess -- and are starting to make structural adjustments of their own. Electronics A Tough Sell Yet Best Buy Stands By Forecast

Oh to be a Electronics Retailer during a recession, roughly as sought-after a profession as 'Big 3 personal flight crew', after that first trip to Washington. But Best Buy (BBY) is holding on in the midst of turbulence while its main competitor has all but bowed out. With Circuit City Stores (CCTYQ) trading OTC and trying to stay afloat, BBY would seem to be serving for the match. If only customers would come to the stores and buy that is. With profits down 77% year over year in the latest quarter it appears on the surface Best Buy is facing some troubles of its own. But the company is being run effectively despite consumer spending reports that are on record as the worst since the early 30s. Oct. 22--The value of gold may be at an all-time high, but there is another metal that is a better investment right now, said Clifford Cooper.
"Silver's a better money-maker," said Cooper, who runs CC Coins, 813 W. Maine.
