by Marc Lichtenfeld, Senior Analyst, Smart Profits Report Thursday, April 16, 2009 Want to get ahead in the investment world? Just follow the advice of infamous bandit, Willie Sutton. When asked why he robbed banks, Sutton had a ridiculously logical answer: “Because that’s where the money is.” Duh. While I wouldn’t suggest you follow Willie’s profession, you can use his logic when investing. Question is: Where’s the money now?
S&P Set for 50%+ Gains? Not So Fast, UBS

The headline is fairly self-explanatory, but it’s true: UBS strategist David Bianco has a 2009 target on the S&P 500 of 1,300 – more than 50% above where it sits now. Talk about a V-shaped recovery. As far-fetched as that might seem, I find these kinds of calls to be thought-provoking because it forces some comparative judgments between where the “market gurus” are, and where I’m at. The last time I did this was in mid-September in the days of S&P 1,250, and it made me realize just how bad the macro environment was becoming, and how little was being priced in to equities. Looking at past history, it seems to me[More...]

Value Idea: Junk Bonds- Again

I want to discuss the Junk Bond idea again, as I am trying hard to kill this investment idea. I will start first with some commentary by Bill Miller from his recent communication with his investors regarding credit spreads: One of the most important bullish signs has been little remarked upon. The monetary base, which consists of cash in circulation or in banks, had been decelerating during the entire (crises) time the Fed had supposedly been injecting liquidity into the system since last August. Thus, the amount of what economist Milton Friedman called high-powered money to stimulate the economy was decelerating, and so was the economy as the crisis continued. Now, though, the base is exploding as the Fed has finally turned up the liquidity pump. Since just after the GSE (Fannie Mae and Freddie[More...]
