Stock Market Sector: Getting Our House In Order

We are still finding that most sectors are outperforming the S&P 500 and generating positive returns. That’s good news as it means it’s been easy to make money in the last 5 weeks. We sure hope your portfolios are getting fatter and your monthly statements some love, maybe even opened. Two sectors are repeat performers from last week, Real Estate Stocks and Autos, Tires & Trucks Stocks. We can’t say that housing has hit a bottom, but we do know the market hits bottom 6-9 months before we know for sure that it’s over. Banks are being given free money again; so, maybe it’s time to take action on that house you have been eyeing. Alternative Energy Stocks made almost a worst to 1st move from week-to-week. That’s the wonderful and terrifying thing about that sector, it’s yo-yo investing.[More...]

Stock Market - Trading Earnings: Is 8 Enough For Crown Holdings Inc. (NYSE: CCK)

The market is right back where it was to start the week last Monday. Our Stock Market Report opinion remains the same that market will have to clean away some major technical analysis trash in order to move on much. Now that earnings season is about to begin in earnest, profits and losses will tell the story. If most companies come out of the basement and say the tornadoes have passed then we will hear the all clear sirens. If most companies just pop their heads up and retreat back into their holes, like the groundhog carnival bop’em game, the next sound we will hear is the next shoe hitting the floor. We have one trading earnings companies investors might be able to profit from during the week. We sure hope you followed last week’s <a href=[More...]

Hope The Lows Will Hold

Good morning. Investors are hoping that last week's lows are going to hold and premarket futures are pointing to a positive open. A large batch of earnings reports (see MER, C, & NOK, UNH, BAX, UTX, EBAY), a better than expected CPI reading and falling jobless claims have set the positive tone in addition to rumors that we're going to see more global rate cuts and more interventions sooner rather than later. The credit markets are showing <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2008/10/16/markets/bondcenter/credit_markets/"[More...]

Be Ready for a Selloff This Week

While I would not be surprised to see continued indecision and low-volume buying early in the week, I am preparing for a big price drop for equities and commodities. A few factors to consider:- Stocks rose very briefly last week on the FNM/FRE takeover news, then quickly moved lower. This is the weakest move we have seen after such significant news of government intervention during the current crisis, indicating the feds are running out of power to put a floor under the market. - A number of sector charts are technically damaged and running into resistance on decreasing volume.- Commodities and energy shares got their bounce (predicted in my Thursday post). They may have a bit more room to run, but not much. While I asserted the "commodity bounce may have legs" last weekend, now I think not.- Emerging[More...]
