In late 2006 I proposed tracking a portfolio of 10 hedge fund managers I considered to be great stockpickers. In sounded good to me in theory, but I always like to let the data speak for itself so I then went and backtested two strategies based on their 13F filings. Top Holdings - This selected the top 2 holdings from each manager to form a portfolio of 20 holdings. Consensus - This selected the most popular ten holdings among the managers. The ten managers were: Baupost Group Blue Ridge Capital Warren Buffett Eminence Capital Greenlight Capital Lone Pine Capital Maverick Capital Okumus Capital Private Capital Tiger Global This process literally took me and a co-worker a month to complete by hand. I found that these two naive strategies of[More...]

Cadence Design in a Mess - Analyst Blog

Cadence Design Systems Inc. (CDNS) appears to be in big trouble as the company's CEO resigned unexpectedly amid mounting financial problems and disappointing results. Adding to the upheaval, the company delayed its Q308 earnings results, expected to be released on October 22nd, on improper accounting issues related to contract revenues signed during Q1. Cadence has been losing share to Synopsys and is struggling through a downturn in the semiconductor cycle. The company also withdrew its bid for Mentor Graphics, further dimming its growth prospects. Shares of Cadence are currently trading near its 52-week low price. Although the stock has fallen significantly this year, we believe it will fall farther given CDNS poor outlook. We therefore believe that the stock should trade at a discount to its peer group.
Should the NASDAQ be Considered a Tech Index?

Many bloggers and stock market commentators often refer to the NASDAQ as "tech-heavy" and it is often treated as a proxy for tech stocks in general. In order to trade the NASDAQ many investors use the PowerShares QQQ Trust ETF (QQQQ). Those who are seeking a little more juice may use the ProShares Ultra QQQ ETF (QLD) which is intended to deliver twice the performance of QQQQ on a daily basis. In any case, we know that the NASDAQ 100 and these ETFs contain stocks that fall into more sectors than just tech. Specifically, the NASDAQ 100 index is limited to the 100 largest non-financial stocks listed on the NASDAQ Stock Market and includes sectors such as media, health care, consumer services, etc.As an alternative to QQQQ and QLD, those who wish to trade a pure technology stock index can use the ProShares Ultra Technology ETF (ROM). This ETF tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Technology index which is comprised of 194[More...]
