Looking at tons of charts this weekend, there is similar patterns on various charts. The majority of stocks have declined the past 3 days and are nearing support of their previous break out highs. The patterns look to SPX as it has the potential to move to test its August highs, but has resistance above it from its breakout highs which it broke below.[More...]

Interpreting Yesterday's Rally

So I am sitting there, and the market's down around 4%. The S&P had breached the October lows, and I'm loaded with short positions, including a pretty large position in the ultrashort EEV. Then it suddenly occurs to me, everybody's watching this level, including the government. And they have hundred of billions of dollars to buy stocks! I started thinking, if I'm Hank Paulson, I'd be buying hand over fist now to protect the low, maybe put a floor under this market. So I covered a bunch of positions, although unfortunately too few, and what had been a magnificently profitable day turned into something quite mundane. That was some gut-wrenching, exhausting action. So call me a tin-hat conspiracy guy, but I think we would still be dropping if it weren't for the plunge-protection team. There’s no doubt commodities stocks have suffered, but few industries have struggled like the aluminum metals and mining segment. The most glaring indicator of the difficulties in this industry was most recently displayed by Alcoa Inc.’s (AA: 10.94, 0.00 (0.00%)) horrid earnings. Verisign, Inc. (VRSN) reported $303 million in revenues during Q2, up 17.1% y/y but down 14.4% q/q. Revenues from core business (Domain Names, SSL Certificates, and Identity and Authentication Services (IAS), came in at $233 million. GAAP EPS came in at ($0.35) for the quarter. Pro-forma EPS of $0.25 exceeded our estimate by $0.03. Core business generated a non-GAAP operating margin of 34.2%, up from 30.3% registered in Q1 2008. Growth in the naming business slowed down. The management provided Q3 revenue guidance of $236-241 million. They remain confident of exiting 2008 with an operating margin of 35%. VeriSign is trading at 31.7 times our reduced 2008 earnings estimate of $0.98 per share. We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we've been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We've also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, watch for a retest to go short or get some Put Options. It retested and broke down again last week, hope you caught some of the action.What about the week ahead? A List of Best Performing Stocks Year to Date

Since we have a break in the action here, instead of doing our normal best performing stocks of the week (not many made the list this week due to a poor market), this is a good time to look at what is performing best so far this year. Further, due the composition of the list and with many of these stocks due for a correction it's probably worthwhile to take a look now, as things might change relatively soon. We looked at a similar list in early November (Nov 4: How to Make 75% in 3 Months) when the list was dominated by large cap Chinese stocks, a few big cap tech stocks, Indian stocks, and fertilizer. Except for fertilizer most of those groups stunk for the better part of the following 5 months, and hence "returned to the mean". That grim scenario, as painted by Steve Roberts, president of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce, is what he perceives as the likely result if Congress persists in passing HR2454.
