Swing Trades For The Day - APWR, SNDK, GLBL, EMR

Markets are up another 1% today on earnings beat by INTC and JPM. I think there is just too much cash on the sidelines afraid of getting caught at the top and waiting for a pullback just in case earnings season disappoints. Now that we have these earnings beats (not necessarily a surprise), some of them are being forced into the market. The question is whether we continue to get consistent earnings beats.[More...]

Another Strong Session

Wall Street had another strong session today, although they gave back a chunk of it in the last hour, but still closed with strong gains across the board with excellent technicals. The day started out with a big gap up. They ran hard and steadily in the morning, reached the session highs right around noon, and then pulled back, retested, bounced and failed to take out the highs and made lower highs, and rolled over in the last hour . Still, net on the day the Dow was up 216 ? at 7978, with a high of nearly 100 points greater than that. The S&P 500 at 834.38 was up 23.30, 11 points off its high. The Nasdaq 100 at 1294.30 was up 41.79, but about 18 points off its high. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) closed up 10 to 243.88, a gain of nearly 4 percent.

It was a blue Monday to start off the week, yet another negative Monday in an ongoing bear market after a 2 1/2-week rally. They gave it all back with a sharp gap down at the opening, made lower lows for the next hour or two, but bounced and held 1205, which is key 6-day support on the NDX. The NDX made lower lows but was not confirmed by the SPX, and late in the day they had a snapback, short-covering type rally. Net on the day the Dow was down 254.16 to 7522, the S&P 500 28.41 to 787.53, and the Nasdaq 100 down 30.66 to 1220.88. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) lost 10.52 to 229.45. The technicals were horrendous. Advance-declines were about 9 to 1 negative on New York and about 3 to 1 negative on Nasdaq.
Wall Street Sells Treasury Secretary's News

Wall Street Sells Treasury Secretary's News By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The markets ended in a bloodbath today with extremely negative numbers across the board. The indices did rally after a negative opening, and the NDX and S&P 500 retested yesterday's highs, but they stopped in their tracks and reversed. In short order they broke through yesterday's lows and headed south quickly, in a very steep 5-wave decline which did terminate just before lunch hour in a nice bounce. But that morphed into bear flags and they went lower again in the afternoon but at a less steeper angle. Only in the last 15-minutes did they manage to bounce again and come off the lows, but fell back again in the last few minutes. Net on the day the Dow was down 382 at 7888.88, the S&P 500 was down 42.73 to 827.16, and the Nasdaq 100 down 52.36 at[More...]

Second Bullish Intraday Reversal In-A-Row Comes On Lower Volume; For The Week, Stock Indexes Pullback On Higher Volume

It was a fitting end to a week that saw emotions pull dramatically at first to the bear side then to the bull side before the week came to end. Today, like yesterday, saw the market selloff early on only to see the bulls pull out an amazing display of confidence as indexes reversed and closed in the green on both Thursday and Friday’s trading session. The same market action that was seen on Thursday and Friday was also seen this week during the past five session. Stocks started the week on a very weak note, sending me from 11 small longs to 5 smaller longs as some recent stocks that I went long gave me signals that they were not ready to blast off and make runs higher quickly. But there was a slight hint that the turn down might not last long. What was that hint? It was the fact that I could only generate ONE NEW short position during the first three days of this very weak week. The Nasdaq fell 5.2% but I only had ONE NEW short that setup in what I[More...]

Nice Rally Today Too Bad It Was On Below Average Volume

Today’s rally, while it probably made you feel all nice and warm on the inside, was still as cold as the grips of a long term bear market. Why? The leadership, silly. The leaders are all still coming from groups that reside in the bottom 25% of industry groups. When you have a real bull market from a bottom you can be FOR SURE that the top 25% of industry groups based on price performance will be leading the way. Right now, there is only one area of leadership, and I am sorry folks that is not going to cut it. That group is the education stocks which are being helped by the only recent IPO out there in LOPE. Besides that we really do not have any amazing group leading. Business Services is such a diversified area that while some stocks look great some look horrible. The facts of a bull market show that in a real bull market rally leading stocks in leading groups help lead the market higher. What we could have here is a bear market[More...]

Stocks Resume Selloff As Distribution Day Rattles Investors Who Bought Last Weeks LAME Rally

Do people not pay attention to volume at all? I am starting to begin they don’t after listening to all the typical talking loud-mouths this weekend. They all clamored and were happy the indexes were up 15% to 20% last week. Yet not a single person anywhere mentioned that volume was lower and lower each day as the rally went along. They also did not mention that we were right near/at the 50 day moving averages which are in a downtrend on all the indexes. Leaving these two key facts out made anything they said irrelevant. There was always a possibility of waking up and seeing a market running away today but the truth is this market is predictable yet insanely impossible to trade unless you are a daytrader. After my initial short positions before the selloff really started, things have been harder to manage as shorts are not going down in a smooth line like they should in a bear market. This is making for a very difficult trading environment and why unless[More...]
