Daily Credit Market Summary: May 19

Spreads improved (tightened) across the board as all the indices rallied today (as a late day sell-off in stocks dragged a short-squeezed IG off its tights). Indices typically underperformed single-names with skews mostly narrower as IG underperformed but narrowed the skew, HVOL underperformed but narrowed the skew, ExHVOL intrinsics beat and narrowed the skew, XO underperformed but compressed the skew, and HY outperformed but narrowed the skew. The names having the largest impact on IG are Hartford Financial Services Group (-47.13bps) pushing IG 0.37bps tighter, and CIT Group Inc (+23.46bps) adding 0.12bps to IG. HVOL is more sensitive with Hartford Financial Services Group pushing it 1.64bps tighter, and CIT Group Inc contributing 0.56bps to HVOL's change today. The less volatile ExHVOL's move today is driven by both Constellation Energy Group Inc. (-25bps) pushing the index 0.25bps tighter, and[More...]

Loews Corporation (L) experienced a 3Q08 net loss from continuing operations came of $0.33 per share, the result of higher-than-expected catastrophe losses and investment losses at CNA Financial Corporation (CNA), which more than offset the improved results at the energy and drilling subsidiaries -- HighMount Exploration, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (DO) and Boardwalk Pipeline Partners LP (BWP). The spin-off of Lorillard in 2Q08 eliminated the company's overhang from tobacco litigation, permitting an increased focuses on broadening hydrocarbon interests.[More...]

This has been a tough year and a very tough 3rd quarter for all sectors. Energy was affected as much if not worse than most of the other sectors. Here I will detail the performance of the virtual mutual fund I've set up for the Energy sector on the Marketocracy web site. Orange line in the chart below shows how my Energy Fund has performed relative to the m100 (a collective Marketocracy fund that uses picks from the top 100 members), S&P 500, Dow Jones Index, and Nasdaq. <a[More...]

Separating Chaffe from Wheat - The Selloff Identifies Future Winners

Although this selloff was painful for many portfolios it can be a useful tool in many ways. One of the most important, in my book, is separating the proverbial chaffe from the wheat - identifying which stocks have been run up by speculators (many of the solar stocks, dry bulk shippers et al) versus those with 'strong hands'. I'd argue that more money could in theory be made playing with those... [[ This is a content summary only.
Loews Corporation (NYSE:LTR) today reported Carolina Group net income for the first quarter of 2008 of $171 million, compared to $189 million in the first quarter of 2007. The decline in net income reflects increased selling, advertising and administrative expenses as a result of costs associated with the proposed spin-off of Lorillard and lower investment income, partially offset by lower interest expense related to the Carolina Group notional debt.[More...]
