The Economy's Rapid Change

Though the January employment numbers were ugly, they were not surprising. The unemployment rate jumped to 7.6%, its highest level since 1992. Approximately 598,000 jobs were shed. Bloomberg News calculated that we are in the biggest employment slump since World War II. What is surprising is the pace at which the economy is contracting. During the first-half of 2008, the unemployment rate averaged 5.15%. Since then, things have gone downhill. It took the employment rate just 9 months to rise from 5% (April) to 7.2% (December). GDP has deteriorated at an equally fast rate. The economy grew at a 2.8% pace in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, the economy contracted 3.8%. Other economic data show a similar story. For example, the ISM Manufacturing survey plunged from 49.5 in July to 35.6 last month.
Jobs Data: Ugly & Worsening

Highlighted companies include Caterpillar (CAT), Costco (COST) and Church & Dwight (CHD). The January employment numbers were ugly. The unemployment rate jumped to 7.6% as 598,000 jobs were shed. The worst part is not that the unemployment rate is at it highest level since 1992 (the data was expected to be bad), but rather that it will get worse. The cumulative total of announced job cuts from the previous 14 days is likely well into the six figures. Even NASCAR is cutting staff. What is surprising, however, is the pace at which the economy has contracted. During the first half of 2008, the unemployment rate averaged around[More...]

533,000 Jobs Lost - Analyst Blog

Nonfarm payrolls plunged by 533,000 in November. This was biggest loss of jobs since December 1974. The unemployment rate rose to 6.7%, a 15-year high. Though far worse than expected, the numbers are not completely surprising given the terrible ISM data released earlier this week. The economy is clearly in a recession and things will get worse before they get better. The economy will get better, however. It's a matter of when, not if. In the meantime, investors need to remain proactive in managing their investments and not take unnecessary risks.
99 Cents Only Stores - Momentum - Zacks Rank Buy

99 Cents Only Stores (NDN) share price has been holding its ground in higher territory since originally being featured as a Zacks momentum stock on Sep 25. This Zacks #1 Rank Stock has been an attractive destination for investors who are seeking a more defensive segment of the market. With economic weakness sending shock waves through the economy, 99 Cents Stores looks well positioned to cash in on consumers trying to pinch pennies and cut costs. Analyst are clearly bullish on the company's future. The next-year estimate is pegged at 34 cents per share, a 103% earnings growth projection. This stock has shifted lower over the last week with the overall market, but still remains in elevated territory on a short-term basis. Take a look at the chart below. <P[More...]

Best Perfomers Over Last Quarter

It is a moot point looking at weekly winners this week; just a handful of stocks moving up led by such growers as Campbell Soup (CPB) aka "people will still need to eat soup if nothing else" trade. So instead I am going to look at the best and worst performers the past 3 months. In this post we have every stock over $1.25B in market cap returning 15%+ (115 stocks) Now keep in mind the data is a bit misleading because 3 months ago at this time we were in the throes of another painful correction, in a series of step ladders down. About 90 days ago Fannie and Freddie and Lehman were falling off a cliff, and we were just over a week away from Hank Paulson going to Congress to create a plan to backup Fannie/Freddie. So this was a "bottom" and the financials rallied hard for the next 6-7 weeks - Fannie/Freddie of course were officially taken over within 2 months from that point.<br[More...]
