CHU Reports, Seals iPhone Deal

China Unicom (CHU) has announced interim 2009 results with reported net income of RMB6.6 billion (US$970 billion) or RMB0.28 per share, down 42.1% compared to RMB12.1 billion (US$1.8 billion) or RMB0.51 per share reported in the corresponding period a year-ago.

This significant year-over-year decline in profitability is due to erosion in fixed-line revenue, higher marketing and capital expenditures associated with deployment and expansion of 3G wireless services, and intense domestic competition. Capital spending for expansion of its 3G network grew 17.1% year over year to RMB10.1 billion (US$1.5 billion) during the first-half of 2009 while associated marketing expenses increased 6.6% to RMB9.7 billion (US$1.4 billion).[More...]

The Apple (AAPL)-Google(GOOG) Rivalry In China

Forget Microsoft-Apple or Microsoft-Google. A new rivalry is developing in the tech world. Google and Apple are increasingly squaring off over lucrative markets like the mobile computing field. The rivalry between the two companies is occurring on a worldwide battlefield. And now this budding Apple-Google rivalry has spread to perhaps the most important mobile phone market in the world – China. China is the world’s largest mobile phone market with 700 million subscribers. However, China has only recently launched third generation services, which offer broadband-speed data connections. Smart phone penetration in China is running at 10 percent of all handsets sold. But the smart phones are expected to generate higher revenues as subscribers access features such as music, multimedia and games downloads. China Mobile will fire the opening shot in the battle for high-value subscribers over the next couple of months with[More...]

Motorola (MOT) recently announced that its Home & Network Mobility business unit was selected as a key development partner of KDDI Corp.’s next-generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. This is Motorola’s first public order for LTE technology. KDDI is the second-largest wireless service provider in Japan. Motorola will implement the basic RAN (Radio Access Network) infrastructure and base stations for the KDDI’s LTE network. Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, we believe that the contract size may exceed $1 billion. Earlier, KDDI had estimated spending about $5.3 billion for installing a countrywide LTE network. KDDI is expected to launch its LTE service in December 2012. The Japanese wireless market is quickly gaining maturity. KDDI faces stiff competition from[More...]
