Job Reports: Why Friday Could Be A Significant Market Day

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 by Martin Denholm, Managing Editor, Smart Profits Report Another big day for Wall Street looms this Friday. Being the first Friday of the month, we’ll get the latest monthly unemployment reading from the Department of Labor - a release that always has Messrs. Rick Santelli and his fellow TV cronies breathlessly awaiting it, before launching into a hyperbolic waffle-fest about what it all means. All monthly job reports are significant, of course. But this one could be more so because it will be a test of the stock market’s recent strength. As we’ve argued here before, the speed and power of the current rally, while impressive, probably isn’t sustainable. Markets never move up and down[More...]

Canada Superior Energy Inc. (AMEX: SNG) is facing a somewhat heated battle with one of its largest shareholders. A huge Caribbean natural gas find has Palo Alto Investors seeking to help the company finance its Block 5(C) gas find. However, the company has already agreed to sell a share in the find to raise cash to support itself. The natural gas find could contain as much as four trillion cubic feet of natural gas, which would amount to roughly one-tenth of Alberta’s gas reserves. However, the company fell into bankruptcy protection after it ran out of Monday, which led to Canadian Western Bank to call on its $45 million loan to the company a month ago. Canadian Superior subsequently announced plans to sell a 25% shares of its 45% stake in the gas find to cover the costs. However, Palo Alto wants the company to consider other[More...]

How could managing money compare? But the letdown never happened. Instead he fell in love with a corner of finance that dealt with stock options.“Options theory is kind of deep in some way. It was very elegant; it had the quality of physics,” Dr. Derman explained recently with a tinge of wistfulness, sitting in his office at Columbia, where he is now a professor of finance and a risk management consultant with Prisma[More...]

The odds of landing a part-time job at department store operator Bealls Outlet Stores Inc. this holiday season are slimmer than getting into Harvard: It's one out of every 45.Don't think the chances are any better at 7-Eleven. One California store received more than 100 applicants in a week and a half for jobs that pay $8.50 per hour -- and the retailer doesn't even usually hire holiday workers. From department stores and convenience chains to call centers, managers who only a year ago had to scramble to fill holiday jobs are seeing a surge in the number of seasoned applicants -- many of them laid off in other sectors[More...]

Friday was a milestone in the evolution of the ongoing financial crisis. No, not the employment data, which was execrable (and prompted Goldman to raise their unemployment rate forecast to an eye-watering 8.5%.) In fact, Friday was notable because it was the first time in quite a while that Macro Man can recall being bored at the office. It seems as if markets have mentally shut down and are content to limp into the end of the year. Liquidity has certainly dried up amongst many of the products that Macro Man trades, and declining volumes in a number of exchange-traded assets also bear testament to a lack of engagement. Moreover, the ever-reliable blog traffic indicator has shown a reasonable decline in eyeballs from the panicky markets of a month ago. As always, that is perhaps explainable by the dearth of quality of the commentary in this space...but nevertheless it would appear to indicate a waning interest in the day-to-day saga of the financial[More...]

Asian stock markets rose last night, encouraged by the US elections. That is a little strange since on the prior night, they talked about Asia liking McCain because of his track record of being for free trade. The Democrats are not strongly for free trade, especially when the US economy is struggling. Next, European stocks sold off on negative economic news. Dow is down 166, decliners over advancers 2-1 & NAZ is down 34 on after election thoughts. The S&P 500 FINANCIALS INDEX dropped 4 to 217. The Alerian MLP Index is down 3 to 222, the Dow Jones REIT index dropped 6½ to 168 & the VIX (Volatility Index) dropped pennies to 47. If there is good news, lower numbers for the VIX suggest markets are calming down, maybe the Dow will only have daily point swings of 1-200. Junk bond funds have been attracting buyers in the last week, but daily gains are measured in pennies because of their low stock prices.
- Challenger Energy Corp. announced today that Challenger, along with its partners, Canadian Superior Energy Inc. and, BG International Limited , a wholly owned subsidiary of the BG Group plc having drilled the "Endeavour" well offshore Trinidad to a depth of approximately 16,921 feet subsea in the final section of the well, have temporary ceased drilling while part of the Kan Tan IV's drilling equipment, the travelling block, undergoes a mechanical repair. Drilling on the "Endeavour" well had progressed to within a few days of reaching the expected final total depth for the well. It is expected that the rig owner, Sinopec Corp., and their managing contractor, A. P. Moller - Maersk A/S, will safely and efficiently complete this repair at their cost with essentially $0 daily rig rate, and the rig will resume drilling promptly towards the end of this week towards the final section of the well.[More...]
