CHU Reports, Seals iPhone Deal

China Unicom (CHU) has announced interim 2009 results with reported net income of RMB6.6 billion (US$970 billion) or RMB0.28 per share, down 42.1% compared to RMB12.1 billion (US$1.8 billion) or RMB0.51 per share reported in the corresponding period a year-ago. This significant year-over-year decline in profitability is due to erosion in fixed-line revenue, higher marketing and capital expenditures associated with deployment and expansion of 3G wireless services, and intense domestic competition. Capital spending for expansion of its 3G network grew 17.1% year over year to RMB10.1 billion (US$1.5 billion) during the first-half of 2009 while associated marketing expenses increased 6.6% to RMB9.7 billion (US$1.4 billion).[More...]

Rumors had been circulating that Dell Inc. (DELL) has been planning to launch its first smartphone. Finally, Dell has confirmed this -- the company will launch its first smartphone in the Chinese market. It has selected China Mobile Limited (CHL) -- China's biggest cell phone carrier -- to roll out the phone exclusively in China. The new Dell handset named mini3i is expected to support applications from China Mobile’s online store, Mobile Market, which was launched this week. With a failing PC business, Dell Inc. (DELL) now plans to enter the mobile phone market. Rumor has it that Dell will launch its first mobile phone -- in the Chinese market exclusively -- within the next two days. Not much information is known about the phone, either on the hardware or the software front, but according to some sources, it will be like an iPhone with a large touch-screen and without a physical keyboard. Russian billionaire Alexander Knaster, who runs pan-European private equity house Pamplona Capital Management, certainly sparked a flurry of buying of Chaucer after revealing he is looking to acquire a possible 29.9pc stake in the specialist insurer, which runs two Lloyd's of London syndicates.
