As the Crises in Dubai created some volatility in the market approaching the weekend, the affect of this story appears to have eased at the moment. Currently the most important data this week looks to be the U.S Non-Farm Employment Change expected on Friday. This publication usually creates unique opportunities to make profits, and traders should take advantage.[More...]

While all the major currencies continue to provide mix results, there is still one extremely strong in the market - the bullish Gold. During last night gold reached over$1,163 an ounce, making another all time high. However, a recovery of the Dollar, if indeed takes place, has the potential to put an end to Gold's uptrend.[More...]

India-IMF Deal: Tipping Point For Gold

India's deal to buy 200 metric tons (6.4 million troy ounces) of gold from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a huge deal – not just the fact that the New Delhi government is handing over $6.7 billion for the metal, but what it may mean for gold going forward. India, the world’s largest gold jewelry market, is making a rational and bullish call on gold. The supply of gold continues to decline - the biggest supply is from governments with socialist policies that are selling their gold to pay for social welfare and bailout programs.[More...]

While most of the news today is focused on the General Motors (GM) bankruptcy, there was an article in the New York Times that is worth reading about the efforts of the banks to get back to business as usual, with no significant changes to the regulatory structure (other that pure cosmetics). This, after the combination of de-regulation and lack of enforcement of financial regulations brought the world to the edge of the financial abyss and caused incredible pain and suffering in the real economy -- not only here in the U.S. but around the globe. Now, lobbying is a constitutional right enjoyed by all citizens, and[More...]

The Friday Political Update – To Pass Or Not To Pass

Friday, February 06, 2009 Love ‘im or hate ‘im, you got to give our 44th president this: He keeps us on our toes. This week, Obama’s main focus was on the stimulus plan that he’s been urgently pressing for agreement on from the Senate. In last week’s FPU, I cautioned that it was going to be a long week for lawmakers, and sure enough, they’ve been haggling over it ever since. Each day passed with some news on the Senate’s progress - or lack thereof - and the president’s reaction to it. Of course though, there was plenty of other issues that captivated public attention along the way. Here’s the recap: Monday, February 2, 2009 Monday opened up with a bang of course, as the Senate rang in the new month by reviewing the stimulus package presented to them. But that wasn’t the news that caught everybody’s attention since Tom Daschle was still trying to fight for[More...]

Would you choose to encumber your own family and future generations to personally pay for the "stimulus" boondoggle? You would necessarily fund continued government waste, fraudulent accounting, pork spending, crony bailouts and other central planning adventures. Pretty much indefinitely. What you've seen lately is what you will continue to get with this funny money crowd. The game has not changed. Most people wouldn't volunteer to cough up decades of commitment to this project. That's why it's not done on a volunteer basis. If you're locked in the fiat dollar sphere you will pay and you will pay dearly. Tennesseans aren't the only ones from the "volunteer state". The feds don't have this money just lying around waiting to be put to good use. They have saved zippo. In fact they've been deeply in the hole for an entire generation and get hopelessly more so all the time.
Citizens, Inc. reported a net loss of $15.7 million or $ per share of Class A common stock for the year ended December 31, 2008. The decrease in earnings was primarily due to an other-than-temporary impairment of $23.5 million on the Company's equity securities. Also contributing to the decrease in earnings was property losses incurred by Security Plan Fire Insurance Company from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in the amount of $845,000 net of tax and a loss from the increase in fair value of warrants associated with the Company's preferred stock. Total revenues for 2008 were $146.7 million, a 13.5% decrease over 2007 revenues of $169.6 million, because of the impairment of equity securities.[More...]
