Nov. 3--For the first time, the state's largest electric and natural gas companies have teamed to create a joint plan for promoting energy efficiency that, if approved, could save their residential and business customers more than $580 million over the next decade.

The $130 million plan was submitted jointly to the state Department of Public Utility Control last month by the Connecticut Light & Power Co., United Illuminating Co., Connecticut Natural Gas Co., Southern Connecticut Gas Co. and Yankee Gas Services Co. It was developed with assistance from the state Energy Conservation Management Board.

"This is a first-ever attempt at bringing all of these utility and energy companies together for a unified effort to make Connecticut more energy efficient," said Jeff Gaudiosi, chairman of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund.

Nov. 3--HARTFORD -- Third quarter earnings at Northeast Utilities fell nearly 11 percent, which company officials said Monday is the result of cooler than usual summer temperatures and the lingering effects of the recession.

That's $7.9 million or 10 cents per share less than NU made during the same period in 2008.

The after-tax charge was the result of a litigation settlement that occurred during the first quarter of that year.

Fitch: 2010 Should be a Turning Point for U.S. Consumer Products Sector

For 2010, Fitch Ratings expects U.S. consumer products companies to see modestly rising demand as global economies revive.

Overall free cash flow (cash from operations less capital expenditures and dividends) should improve in 2009 despite global economic weakness, allowing most companies considerable latitude to meet internal capital needs and debt service in 2010.

Fitch says large acquisitions did not play a meaningful part in top-line growth for the sector in 2009 nor are they projected to do so in 2010 except for The Stanley Works (SWK) merger agreement with Black & Decker (BDK).
