NYT: China / Australia - Where Iron Is Bigger Than Gold & Oil

I don't necessarily agree with the title of the piece, but it's an interesting observation within this New York Times story. For newer readers, let me remind how the Baltic Dry Index (a pricing index for shipping costs which now is seized by investment pundits as one of "the tells on global growth") has been completely dominated by the Chinese and their interest in iron ore. When they are making purchases - the BDI rises, when they are not so interested, it drops. And 2,356 of them – or 87% – were small caps. Trouble is, the small-cap universe, as a whole, can be tough to navigate. Over the same period, the Russell 2000 Index lagged the S&P 500. The trick is to find the right small-cap stock – one that’s safe, yet growing its business quickly… and rewarding shareholders for taking an early position. Here’s one way to sift through the potent Russell 2000 Index and uncover a winner – using the stock screener of your choice: Size: Isolate stocks with a market capitalization between $1 billion and $5 billion. Growth: Screen your results again for[More...]

Dividend Cuts Could Be Spreading To Commodities Companies

There were several dividend cuts last week, including a notable one from a commodities company. A report from Deutsche Bank analysts predicted dividend cuts in several mining companies, including Alcoa (AA), Southern Copper (PCU), Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF) and Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (RIO), which further depressed investor sentiment, and sent basic materials stocks lower. The negative dividend news concerning the materials sectors shouldn’t really affect overall dividend sentiment, as the dividend payments that these companies pay are typically not as consistent and smooth in terms of size of payment, due to the cyclical nature of the commodities business. With metals prices dropping significantly off of their record highs over the past few months it is no surprise that Deutsche Bank is expecting dividend cuts in the above mentioned companies. On December 3, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. announced a reduction in its copper production and[More...]

Cliffs Natural Resources Inc (CLF) expects to benefit from robust industrial growth in China and India, which are pushing demand for steel, fueling higher demand for iron ore. However, the company is suffering from a weak production profile, rising energy costs, and high customer concentration. Recently, it terminated the definitive merger agreement with Alpha Natural Resources, which would have created the largest North American producer of metallurgical coal. Combination of these factors lead us to rate the shares a Hold with a target of $20.00. In 2008, Cliffs expects revenue per ton in its North American Iron Ore segment to average $91. The company indicated that revenue per ton in its North American Coal segment is expected to average $93 for 2008. I suspect that hedge funds have been blowing out my positions. I’ve ben talking about stock survivability lately. What does that mean? Low levels of short-term debt. Few major debt maturities coming in the next three years. Low levels of total debt relative to tangible capital.
